Thursday Outfit: A Business Casual Look for Fall

Sep 8, 2022

Temperatures this weekend will dip below freezing overnight, so it feels like fall.  I won’t be in the office much (I’m on maternity leave but have a handful of active cases I need to keep an eye on over the next few weeks), so I’m on the hunt for chic business casual looks.  And this one definitely fits the bill.

I spotted this look on Pinterest, and I was instantly smitten.  The soft neutrals, sleek pieces, and easy elegance really grabbed my attention.  So let’s recreate it using pieces you can shop for today,

Blazer // A camel blazer is a must-have.  I bought one several years ago, and I’m always surprised by how often I reach for it.  It’s a versatile neutral that pairs well with many colors (it is absolutely stunning with black or grey).

This Willa Blazer from J.Crew is a great option.  It’s well made, well priced (esp. on sale) and the color is a softer camel with blush hues.  Other options include my favorite Banana Republic blazer, and this under-$100 Schoolboy Blazer from J.Crew Factory.  Plus-size? The J.Crew blazer comes in 1x-3x.

Sweater // These cashmere tees from J.Crew are the perfect layering pieces for cold weather.  If you live in a place where it gets cool, but not cold, they let you layer sweaters without overdoing it for the conditions.  I also love this darker, toffee-colored sweater.  Yoox also has this affordable, under-$50 option.

Denim // Cream denim is still a great purchase for anyone who can wear jeans to work but isn’t quite ready for white in winter.  These wide leg jeans from Nobody’s Child are a great piece for under-$75.  And unlike most cream denim you see, this pair isn’t hemmed short enough to qualify as flood preparedness.

I also found these jeans from Mother and this flared pair from Boden are both worth a look.  Plus?  Try these Lola straight legs.

Shoes // My Mother owns these Cole Haan sneakers, and she adores them.  When they got damaged on a trip to the pool with her grandchildren, she replaced them immediately.  They’re comfortable, sleek, and simple.  They’re the sneaker for people who don’t wear sneakers.  Need a less expensive pair?  Naturalizer has a very similar pair for under-$100.

Accessories // I chose these hoops because the beaded detail made them different, cooler.  They give you all the sleek, bold drama of a hoop with a little something extra.

Layering pendants is still a hot look.  You can buy them already paired up.  Or you can buy the pieces, like this chunky chain necklace and this super affordable initial tag necklace.  For a more delicate pendant, this Satya necklace or this engraveable Mejuri pendant are both fantastic.

Styling // I like this look with a sleek ballerina bun pinned low (video tutorial).  It shows off the collar of the jacket and the earrings.  Also, red and camel are also a classic combination, so don’t miss the red lip.  Glossier’s red lipstick is almost foolproof because it’s a little lighter and a bit sheer.

I have those Naturalizer shoes and they are great. Comfortable, look nice, and available in wide. They’re going with me to Italy in 2 days, so hoping they can stand up to the walking. 🙂

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
