Q&A: New-to-You Beauty Products

Jan 6, 2022

It’s been awhile since we’ve talked about our favorite new things.  Due to the pandemic, I’ve been stuck in a bit of a rut, but I’m trying to branch out a bit.  So let’s chat.

Being back at work, I’ve tried a few new beauty products to improve my morning routine, and I have two I’d like to talk about.  One I am totally smitten with, and one that’s so good, I’m going to start giving it as gifts.

Milk Hydro Gripping Primer. Wearing a mask for a big part of the day, my makeup needs to stay on.  This Gripping Primer works so well.  It feels light, and non greasy.  And, best of all, a little goes a long way (it took me weeks to go through a trial size).  Add some Urban Decay All Nighter, and the hold is nearly perfect — a little bit of wear and tear, but you still look fresh.

Grande Brow Serum. Growing back my eyebrows (after I misspent my youth overplucking) has been a decade-long odyssey.  For the most part, they’ve grown in nicely, but they still need some work, so I picked up the brow serum from Grande Cosmetics.

It’s only been a week, and the growth is already visible. I can’t wait to see where I am in a couple of months when my mini-size runs out.  But for the time being, I’m filling in the sparse spots with Hourglass Micro-Sculpting Brow Pencil (the narrow tip makes hair-width, feather-like strokes a breeze).  As the meme says, I regret nothing but my eyebrows from 15 years ago.

Do you have any new-to-you products that you’re loving?  One you would caution your fellow readers to stay away from?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

I just got a few of the new (re-released, I believe) Colourpop blotted lip lipsticks. https://colourpop.com/collections/blotted-lip

The colors “talker” and “missin u” are just gorgeous and YLLB on me. Love the sheered-out (but buildable) intensity. Very comfortable formula, as well. $7 each!

  2. Kirstin says:

I’m currently obsessed with all things Earth Therapeutics, especially their foot masks. My feet were in rough shape, having not gotten a pedicure since pre-pandemic. The masks, and their foot cream, are amazing.

I tried the Ilia mascara folks have been raving about and didn’t get the hype. So I purchased another all-natural mascara by Saie and I LOVE it.

    • EMM says:

I could have written this – I bought & promptly returned the Ilia mascara recently too. Cannot understand the hype!!

  4. Sam says:

It’s silly expensive, but I get complimented all the time on my long eyelashes that only grew with the Lash Boost Serum for Eyelashes from Rodan&Fields. And I’m a redhead with blondish natural lashes. It takes about a month of nightly application to see results–then look out!

    • Allison says:

Ditto for Revitalash. It works almost miraculously well and it’s not THAT expensive; about $300/year which is a whole lot less than I spend on my hair or skincare.

  5. Nancy says:

Looking for guidance on starting to use Vitamin C…do I want an oil or a serum and which one that works but also won’t be more than 75.00…was hoping for 50.00 but if its really a good product…then will go up to 75.00. I have been reading on line…see it needs to be “stable”…???

    • ACL says:

Yes–my esthetician recommends a Vitamin D that is stable. I really like the Dermalogica Biolumin Vitamin C Serum. It’s not cheap though!

    • MARY says:

I’ve had good results with the Summer Fridays CC Me, which is $66 at Sephora.

I prefer a lightweight serum because vitamin C is the first thing I put on my skin in the morning. This one dries quickly, isn’t sticky, and layers well with whatever other stuff you put on top of it. I’ve never had issues with it oxidizing too quickly, prob because it’s a pump rather than a dropper.

Bonus: it doesn’t smell like hot dog water like some of the higher-end options.

    • DC says:

I use the Inkey Vitamin C serum and like it (and it doesn’t have the same smell as many other Vitamin C products have). It’s also really affordable, so it might be a good entry point.

    • Eleni says:

Take a look at BeatyStat universal c skin refiner. It’s $80 but I can usually find it on sale (dermstore/skinstore has it 20%off) 20% pure, stable vitamin C. This has been mygo to for the past year.

    • Shanghai says:

I use the Paula’s Choice one. <$50 full price, but I usually try to wait for a coupon or sale (which is frequent. Look for 15-20% off regularly).

    • Carly says:

I like la Roche-posay! Around $50 but can get coupons at target/cvs/ulta

    • Emily G says:

Check out Goalstogetglowing on IG. She does lots of vitamin c posts. Based on her info I’m using Paula’s choice and liking it.

  6. meghan says:

I hate recommending a luxury product, and I hate myself for buying it, but the Tom Ford foundation really was a game changer for me. It stays all day (with Urban Decay setting spray) and truly is the best foundation I’ve ever used. Smooth, long-lasting, great coverage, can’t feel it at all.

  7. Mary says:

Grande Brow *really* works. I used it sporadically for a few months and wound up looking like Eugene Levy.

  8. Meg says:

I have had awful maskne the entire pandemic, made worse by having to go off my acne meds when trying to get pregnant last year. I thought I had tried everything, but then I grabbed a Farmacy Toner (I think it’s called “Deep Sweep”) and now my chin is completely manageable. I’m thinking about switching all my skincare products to their brand now.

    • Belle says:

      I like their gel moisturizer.

    • Cait says:

Thanks for the maskne rec- ordering now! After 2 weeks without wearing a mask for longer than a trip to the grocery store (stayed home for the holidays) and my skin clearing up completely, it’s been really discouraging to watch the break outs return over the course of this week back at work. At this point it feels like I’ve tried everything, but I’m still up to try anything that has even a chance of helping!

  9. Katel says:

It turns out Wander Beauty makes more than the gold under eye masks and it’s quite good

Their vitamin C (Sight C-er) is light weight cream – in the summer I found it enough to use solo with sunscreen on top. In drier winter air I layered a moisturizer on top.

I also like the double ended highlighter and cream blush stick.

I got Kat Von D go big or go home mascara in fab fit fun box – I’m meh on it.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
