Opinion Page: Product Follow-Ups, No. VII

Jan 5, 2022

Every now and again, I like to follow-up on items that I wrote about previously.  Do I still love the purchase months later?  Did I re-buy when the bottle or jar was empty?  Is that piece of clothing still on heavy rotation?  Let’s talk.

I purchased Blueland’s hand soap in July, and initially, I liked the product.  I loved the idea of using small tablets and water from the tap to make hand soap instead of shipping full bottles.  But by the holidays, both dispensers had broken.  The pumps just weren’t up to the job.  I’ve been hunting for a soap dispenser that will use foaming tablets so I can use up the remaining product, but I haven’t found a durable one yet.

I posted about the Alo Yoga Airlift Legging back in October.  I love them for long walks, hikes, or  Peloton rides.  True to their description, they do fit like a second skin, lifting and shaping everything.  But the real reason I love them is because there is no chafing, which is really a gift.

The sizes run 00 to 14, and the size guide is accurate.  But be warned, these are not a relaxed, comfortable legging like a Lululemon Align.  These leggings fit snugly, not uncomfortably, but not relaxed and breezy.

This is the fourth time that I’ve written about Knix underwear.  I cannot stress this enough: I would never have made it through IVF without these.  Going to the office after ultrasound appointments, sneezing while using the progesterone suppositories, all of the weird, uncomfortable things that happen to the body, were made easier and more bearable thanks to these underwear.

If you are planning to do IVF, get a few pair.  If you have unpredictable periods, get a few pair.  If you have a teenage child, get these underwear.  At least twice a day, I was grateful for Knix. I would buy shares in this company if I could.

The Super Leakproof boy shorts and thongs are my favorite.  The high rise medium leakproof ones are good too.

Looking for an update on a specific product?  Leave the name in the comments and I’ll follow up in the coming weeks.

laughed out loud reading “sneezing while using progesterone suppositories” – things i never understood/identified with until recently, but YUP.

    • Meghan says:

Amen x1000. The whole process is a lot, but these suppositories were my actual least favorite part.

      • Belle says:

It wasn’t the 18g PIO shot? Because that’s like being harpooned in the backside every day for me.

        • Meghan says:

I ended up with progesterone lozenges to dissolve under my tongue three times a day. Waxy and vaguely nauseating, but I didn’t have to do the PIO shots because of them. I hope you don’t have to do another round, but if that happens, ask for the troches.

    • STeph says:

Totally agreed. And when that IVF does work, they’re great for the third-trimester game, “is it urine or did my water break?”

  2. Colleen says:

I don’t think foaming soap dispensers are all that sustainable. I’ve tried a few brands with the refills and none worked well once I refilled them. I switched back to regular liquid hand soap after spending too much time and energy on trying to make the other dispensers work.

  3. Emily says:

Love this series! So appreciate your honesty and willingness to try new products!

  4. LJG says:

Period underwear is a game changer. We’re a Thinx household, but what a difference, no matter which brand.

    • Sarah says:

+10,000. My friends and I have all become period underwear users, and I only wish I’d had them since I was 15 instead of discovering them when I was 40. Run, don’t walk, to the website and buy them. I usually only wear them at night, but they’re so so so much better than pads.
Also, on the recommendation of a friend, I bought Thinx running shorts. They’re a game changer too. Neither pads nor tampons ever worked well for me for running or bootcamp. But the shorts are fantastic.

  5. Diane says:

I use Blueland tabs in empty Bath & Body Works foaming dispensers. They are not all that pretty, but functional and as they eventually break I don’t have heartburn about buying a replacement.

  6. Sarah says:

I haven’t tried KNIX underwear yet, but I can recommend SPEAX as being incredibly comfortable and useful.

  7. Stefanie says:

You can buy period under with your FSA/HSA money!

  8. Jess says:

LOVE the Knix underwear. Bought them at your recommendation and they have CHANGED MY LIFE. No more tampons and pads. Free bleeding forever.

  9. BN says:

Thank you so much for telling us when a product is no longer a recommendation! Also, I want to add my vote for period underwear. I was REALLY skeptical but thanks to work from home, I was able to test them out in a “safe” environment (if they failed and I had an accident at least my coworkers wouldn’t witness it) and WOW they really do work! If you’re skeptical like me, get a pair and test them out at home. 🙂

  10. ARH says:

I just bought some of the period underwear for my daughter and me. We both suffer from heavy periods, especially at night, so I am hoping this helps us both save our sheets!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
