A Week of Tops: The Base Layer You Need

Dec 16, 2021

With the winter season soon upon us, many of us are regularly wearing sweaters.  And with so many sweaters made of itchy wools or scratchy poly-blends, a base layer is important.  This bodysuit gives you an added layer without added bulk.

This seamless Yummie bodysuit smooths and shapes, but I don’t find it constricting.  It’s a fantastic base for layering.  And the fabric is a good weight, so the white option isn’t see through. If you don’t want to wear a thong, Yummie also makes a full-back bodysuit.  And they make a plus-size version in white.

As for the sizing, a small runs 2-8, a medium 8-12.  I didn’t want a top that was too tight, so I tried both sizes.  (I left sausage-casing shapewear in my early thirties.)  The size guide says I’m an 8, and the medium gave me just the right about of slimming without being uncomfortable.  So if you’re in between, size up.

Yummie makes a lot of great bodysuit styles.  You can choose sleeve-length, color, and neckline. They all look great under sweaters, blazers or layers under other tops.

Before settling on this Yummie bodysuit, I tried the Skims brand as well.  I thought the bodysuits were well-made and I liked the wide variety of skin tones and sizes that they came in.  My complaint is that the material seemed to pill very quickly.  Judging from the reviews, that may be a rare experience, so if you want a new option, give Skims a try.

Ok but silly question — how do you go to the bathroom?

Most of the body suits that I own have snaps at the bottom. I also sometimes ignore the snaps altogether, and just tuck them in. It’s more comfortable, in my opinion, but still gets the sleek look. I scrolled through some reviews on the one that Abra identified, and they do mention snaps, FYI!

Any recommendations for bodysuits with cups? I’m small-chested and I’d love to go without a bra but still have some nip coverage.

You said “base layer,” and I immediately thought of a different thing altogether.

If anybody else was thinking of woolly layers for camping or hiking, and is looking for a recommendation, I love the Patagonia Capilene Air crew. It’s also great for wearing under a blazer at the office.

Random tip, but patagonia stands by their quality. Great brand to purchase. If something gets a tear, etc, you can just walk into a store and exchange it for a brand new item.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
