Ask the Edit: Outfits for Date Nights

Dec 2, 2021

As we enter our third year reorganizing our lives around a pandemic, everything is different.  The way we work, the way we go to school, even the way we date.  Let’s talk about first date outfits.

Hi Abra,

I’m venturing out into the world of dating after a pandemic-induced break. Probably like a few other readers, I’ve gained a little weight, and my previous “feel good” date night clothes don’t quite fit. Any suggestions for winter weather-appropriate first date looks for those of us who want to feel good in our pandemic bodies?

Thanks in advance for your help! Amy

I understand this issue.  You open your closet and reach for your favorite look, but it doesn’t look as good as it once did.  Maybe it doesn’t button or zip.  And instead of feeling good, you know feel bummed out.

Who says a sweater dress has to be stuffy and boring?  This Chelsea 28 Dress has a fantastic sweetheart neckline, a fun puff sleeve and a slightly dramatic (but not too showy) side slit.

Wrap dresses are also a nice option.  You can dress them up with heels and earrings or down with boots and a belt.  I like this Vici dress because it also has an open back.  This velvet burnout wrap dress is also a nice option.  Plus-size?  This bold, cobalt dress is a nice look for a date.

Donna Karan once said that a woman’s collarbones never gain weight.  If you’re adjusting to your pandemic body, a dramatic one shoulder or off the shoulder top can give you a bit of date night glamour while flattering your body.

This top from Open Edit is very affordable and so cool.  I also like this dolman sleeve top from River Island.  This Line & Dot sweater and a pair of medium hoops.  Plus-size?  Try this off-the-shoulder top from Eloquii.

These are my best suggestions for pieces that might flatter and offer confidence while you adjust your wardrobe to your new body or, if you want to, work on getting your body back into your old wardrobe.  Other suggestions?

Wear a color you really love or that stands out.  Sometimes a bold color creates a lot of impact even if the piece itself is fairly relaxed.

Wearing a great accessories can really jazz up an outfit.  Even if you just wear a t-shirt and a pair of great jeans, a fabulous beaded hoop and a bold lipstick go a long way.  Add a bright red heel to go with the lipstick and you’re golden.

If anyone has other tips for looking and feeling your best on a date, leave them in the comments.

I just bought the one-shoulder top by Open Edit. Looks perfect for my NYE at home with my husband.

I’ve recently started following Matchmaker Maria on Insta and she recommends blue and green for first dates! She says to save your black tops for the 2nd/3rd date. Random advice, but I’m going to try it!

I love these recommendations, and in the past few days I’ve purchased several items you’ve recommended, but from Thred Up/ Poshmark vs the original retailer. Is there a way in the future to help get you credit for those since they aren’t through your traditional affiliate links?

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
