This week, I’ll be posting some Ask the Editor questions that have been lingering in my inbox. So let’s start with a question for the cooler weather.
Ask Belle question:I am looking for ideas for a new jacket; my new work from home life makes me feel like I have lost all concept of jackets that aren’t hoodies or fleeces.
I have a reasonably dressy wool coat (doesn’t get any use now that I don’t dress up/go to work) and I have a very warm and functional winter jacket (it’s toasty but not very cute). I am looking for something in the middle – a little less casual than a puffer jacket, and less formal than a wool/peacoat style; doesn’t have to be super warm, but maybe something that I would wear to a happy hour with colleagues at an outdoor bar with heaters or a firepit.
Curious if you have thoughts. Thanks!
Work from home has turned everyone’s wardrobe more casual. It’s both nice, and a little sad. I’m heading back to the office this week, and it feels a little strange to dust off the work clothes (literally, dust, everywhere).
My favorite LL Bean utility jacket comes in a fleece-lined version for a bit of extra warmth. I wear the green with regularity. My husband would consider it too frequently, but until he stops wearing flip-flops when there’s snow on the ground, his thoughts are irrelevant.
Want something a little more fashion forward? Shearling-lined suede and leather jackets are very popular right now. This one at Express is affordable. This Bernardo jacket is pretty fantastic too.
Madewell also has great jackets and coats. This hooded jacket is semi-casual, but stylish.

“…thoughts are irrelevant.” lolololol
Thank you for answering my question in this post! Great suggestions as always, appreciate it!
I got this jacket in Black Plum on your recommendation a month ago and it’s absolutely perfect! I will say that I got the flannel-lined one and it’s not quite as warm as a peacoat, but it’s perfect for Fall days in the South over short sleeves and will work well into Winter here with layering. The lining also looks pretty if I roll the sleeves up. The drawstring makes it super flattering even with a sweater underneath and it looks great with basically every outfit!
I also have this coat and really like it! I’m a recent transplant to the midwest, so I’ve already put this jacket away for the season, but it was great down to like 40 degrees, if there was no wind.
