As you know, I am primarily a wearer of dresses and skirts. But it’s cold in Montana (bitter cold). So whether I like it or not, pants are a necessary part of my work wardrobe now. And since I don’t want to restock my shoe wardrobe, I’m sticking with basic black. Luckily, I found some favorites.
These Nic + Zoe Wonderstretch Straight Leg Pants are my go-to work pant right now. I like that they’re slim but not skinny. The fabric is comfortable and stretchy, and doesn’t wrinkle significantly over the course of the day. Another nice feature is that they don’t stretch out like many pants do, so they fit the same in the morning as they do at 6:00PM.
Also available in petite, these are a very popular pant that’s sold out in many sizes. You can find more misses sizes at Saks Fifth Avenue, which also offers a wide range of Wonderstretch pieces. Plus-size? Neiman Marcus has a limited number of plus-size items from Nic + Zoe including these pants.
These Ann Taylor Trouser Pants come in curvy or classic fit. If you need a pair of basic black pants, AT has every style you could possibly want. I have two pair of these Trouser pants: one hemmed for heels and one hemmed for flats.
Need an alternative to leggings? These J.Crew Pixie Pants are the best option on the market. They’re soft, flexible, and heavier weight than the standard legging. They’re also machine washable, which makes them a great option for travel. J.Crew offers these in their full size range — misses, plus, petite, and tall.

How would you style the pixie pants- or any other work pant- with shoes you can wear with socks? I always feel frumpy but my feet get cold! Booties? Loafers?
I wear clogs and extra thick socks, or blundstones. Both are a little casual, so if I’m dressing up I wear them with ankle boots that hide the gap
I wear my trouser pants with pointed toe boots when I want to wear socks. I wear the pixie pants with a combination of sneakers and flat black ankle boots.
The slim ones are sold out in black in most sizes — the Belle effect 🙂
Going to try a couple Ann Taylor options. I’ve had luck there before. Unimpressed with Loft’s selection right now.
AT curvy fit trousers are my JAM–they fit my pear-shaped bottom half so well. (Lots of deals to be had on eBay and Poshmark too!) However, if you prefer to buy new and want a less expensive option, the Worthington Curvy Perfect trouser pants from JC Penney are excellent. They wash very well and they go on sale often–I’m wearing my charcoal gray ones right now. (If you can get to a store, the selection is way better than online.)
