Seven Housewarming Gifts Under-$75

Jun 10, 2021

It has been over a year since I have seen most of my friends.  During that time, people have gotten married, had babies, changed jobs, and many have moved.  Several of my friends bought homes or upgraded to larger apartments.  And now that we’re free to socialize again, I’m being invited to more than a few housewarmings.

Here are seven great gifts that won’t break the bank.

This Coffee Scoop Clip is my go to gift under-$10.  I have three of them in a closet at home in case I need a gift in a hurry.  Just pair this handy item with a bag of freshly ground local coffee and maybe a mug, and you have a pretty awesome gift.  It also makes a great stocking stuffer.

I gave these Luma & Co. handblown glass cloches as Christmas gifts this year, and they were a big hit.  They are beautifully made, go with any decor, and look great on a coffee table.

The White Company also makes a really beautiful cloche that comes in two sizes in a more modern style.  But if you’re hoping for something more affordable, I love the Original Matchstick Bottle with matches and built in striker.

Games can be a fun gift for a new homeowner.  If they have outdoor space, this giant rainbow Jenga is worth a look.  For a lover of indoor games, may I suggest a nice cribbage board?

A great cookbook makes a great gift.  I tend to stick to the classics — Joy of Cooking, Mastering the Art of French Cooking — but you can also go with a newer option.  If you prefer something more recent, try Salt Fat Acid Heat or Cook this Book.

A wine decanter is a must for any drinker of red.  This one from Crate & Barrel is popular, and well-priced.  If your recipient is hurting for cabinet space (hello, city living), a Vinturi wine aerator is also a great gift.  And if you are looking for the gift for the wine drinker in your life, this Ullo device chills, aerates, and removes sulfites from your wine — bye, bye hangovers.

This Creative Co-op Terracotta Bowl has been featured here a couple of times this year, but it’s just that good.  It matches any decor.  It useful and stylish.  And once you buy one, you will also start hoarding them to give to people as gifts.  Because I can’t think of a better quick gift under-$20.

The good soap.  It looks great by a kitchen or bathroom sink, and it’s useful too.  This Soeder grapefruit soap is pretty fab, it also comes in a few other scents.  I also love this <$25 Milk and Honey hand soap.  Malin + Goetz also makes a great hand wash, though the packaging isn’t as pretty.

broke down & bought the bowl! hard to say if I’ll keep it for myself or give it away 😀

I try not to give anything breakable or too precious for families with little kids, so the giant Jenga is a perfect option. My other go-to house gifts are personalized items with the family’s last name or monogram. I have done doormats, GOT cutting boards (https://www.etsy.com/listing/690331899/game-of-thrones-cutting-board) and metal decorative signs. I think the coffee clip + coffee is a lovely hostess gift idea, especially for those not preferring alcohol.

  4. LM says:

I have given wind chimes a few times and it was so well received. Something you don’t think of when your filling cabinets or hanging shower curtains. But, nice to hear in the background.

  5. Jenny says:

My go-to gift: a bottle of high-quality olive oil or balsamic vinegar. A twist on the usual bottle of wine, and you can pick up a relatively high-end one at most grocery stores.

  6. Anne says:

I’d also suggest “Food Lab” by Kenji Alt-Lopez for a cookbook. It’s one of the absolute best.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
