The Find: The Most Comfortable Work Pants Ever

May 14, 2021

Sometimes I promote something on the blog and it goes better than I ever could have imagined.  Friends text me to say how much they love the thing I recommended.  People DM me photos of themselves wearing it on Instagram.  Strangers stop me on the street, in airports or bars to tell me thank you.

When I recommended these pants, I loved them so much, I figured you ladies would too.  However, I did not expect that so many of you would buy multiple pairs, gift them to your Moms for Mother’s Day, and send me so many notes.

But yes, the pants are that good.

I’m going to say something a little bit controversial about the Athleta Skyline II Pants: They are more comfortable than leggings.  Yes, you read that right.  More comfortable than leggings.

The Skyline pants have a paper bag shape in a relaxed fit.  The tie-waist is a fun detail.  And did I mention they were more comfortable that leggings?

The pale grey and black are still available in all sizes.  The straight sizes in the navy and dusty rose are sold out, but they are still available in plus sizes.  Sizes run 00 to 26.

I wear these pants too often.  If I have a doctor’s appointment, a coffee meeting, or just something where I need to be out of the house and semi-professional, these are my first choice.  I tuck in a cotton blouse, maybe I add a relaxed blazer, and a pair of Rothy’s and I’m done.

Seriously, give these pants a try.

They are even on sale right now – almost all sizes in black, lucky sizes in other colors.

  2. Julie says:

So – I bought these pants on your strong recommendation. They are cute and comfortable. Do you, um, wear a foundational item underneath? I’m feeling a little exposed by the thin material.

  3. Joanie says:

I am wearing them right now! They are so good!

  4. Hilary says:

I got them (in a tall size!) upon your recommendation and love them!I got the shortsin the rose as well. My only regret is not getting them sooner and also getting them in navy.

  5. Lexi says:

Because of your recommendation, I now have 3 pairs. They truly ARE the most comfortable pants I’ve ever owned. And they have pockets! Thank you!

  6. Mandi says:

I’m hoping Abra or other readers can share specifics on how to style these. What kind of blouse? Loafers or pointed toe flats? I wish the Athleta website showed how to style these for business casual wear

  7. Jules says:

I also bought them on Abra’s recommendation and have loved them! I wear a black tank tucked into the rose colored pants, and have gotten multiple compliments.

  8. ALlI says:

Has anyone with a larger bottom half and size (10-12) tried these? The looser material and waistline seems like it would add volume and be unflattering on the mid-larger sizes. Just curious if anyone has tried them personally and feels differently.

    • Alli says:

Replying to myself. After posting this I actually went to the site to check them out and answered my own question. Still would like a firsthand review if anyone has one to share. Thanks!

      • Lauren says:

I wear a 10! I’m 5’8” with a fairly straight body type. You can size down to the 10 if you’re a 10-12 and they are ultra flattering in black. I have resisted buying the gray because I think it shows a little more and I was worried about cellulite showing. I always wear a slim cut shirt on top for a flattering fit.

    • e says:

I’m typically at 14 and bought a 12 and 14, but ultimately went with the 12s. These are much more fitted on me than on the model but I like them a lot. I carry weight in my midsection and so it can be a tricky area for me to dress. I find these very flattering, there are pleats but not too many and the material is very light so it doesn’t add a lot of bulk. The tie adds definition to the waist. I also have a full bum and thighs and I found the pants flattering on both. I’m 5’6″ and the length was perfect too. About to buy a second color!

    • Elizabeth says:

So I’m a 12-14 and ordered these. They were super comfy and looked fine, but were a little voluminous for me. I ended up returning the, and ordering the Brooklyn pants from Athleta. Similar comfort, leggings feel but a little more form fitting which is better for my body type

      • ABVV says:

I really wanted to love these but ended up returning them. I wear a size 16/18 with most of the weight in my stomach/hips/thighs. The pleats ended up unflatteringly open when I tried a 16, but an 18 would’ve been too baggy everywhere else. The self-fabric belt was also not quite long enough to drape nicely, so it just stuck out at my waist. I’ve had better luck with other Athleta pants like the Brooklyn.

        • RS says:

Same, unfortunately. I carry my weight in my stomach/thighs/rear and these pants were NOT flattering at all. I’m 5″7, size 16/18 and they made me look really short and even stockier than I normally look 🙁 It was such a disappointment given everyone’s high praise. Honestly, it made me feel like something was wrong with me.

          • Belle says:

I’m sorry for the disappointment. It’s always hard when something works for others and not you. Being pear shaped, it happens to me a lot with dresses. But there’s nothing wrong with you, sometimes things just don’t work.

  9. SC MD2 says:

For anyone who doesn’t want the tie-waist detail, the Brooklyn Ankle Pant is a great alternative. I’m currently wearing the one I bought in 2018 and it’s great for almost everything.

  10. Natalie G says:

Good god do I love these pants. I bought Rothy’s because of you and I love them. But DAMN these pants! They feel like workout pants but are not too tight on my leg and make my butt look awesome. I’m a 14 size. Thank you for all you post, sometimes it’s the highlight of my day!

  11. AnnIE says:

Wow. Bought these on your recommendation and I can’t believe how great they are! I’m 5’6″ and 165 (thanks covid) so I’m a size 10/12. Bought the 10 and they’re great! Also picking up the Brooklyn pants on the commenters recommendations. These are the perfect step up from my lulu Align joggers that are my daily go-to.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
