Thursday Outfit: Come into The Fold

Feb 4, 2021

I swore I wasn’t going to buy any new clothes for work until the weather changed, but I ran into a hiccup called pandemic weight gain.  With only 50% of my wardrobe currently available to me, I snapped up a handful of pieces to make it through to the other side.  And my new favorite dress came from a lesser-known brand called The Fold.

Dress // This Mayfair Heart-Leaf Print Dress felt like a nice bridge between winter and spring.  It has a flowy, flirty a-line shape.  The ruffle details on the cuffs and collar are lovely.  And it’s so comfortable.

The Fold doesn’t offer an affiliate code, but it does offer a refer-a-friend feature.  So if you decide to make a Fold purchase, you will receive $40 off with this code, as will I. To receive the reward, click on the link asking if you’ve “Been referred by a friend?” in the The Fold checkout and Abra Belke.

Looking for a similar dress at a lower price point?  This Rebecca Taylor blurry-heart dress (also in navy) and this H&M dress has a black-and-white print.  I also like this Ann Taylor floral smocked dress.

Blazer // This puff sleeve blazer is in heavy rotation in my wardrobe.  Zara doesn’t make it anymore, but this Express blazer (also in petite), which I have tried on in store is a faithful recreation.  Plus-size?  This ASTR blazer is very close in style.

Belt // As you can see, I’m not wearing a belt in the photo.  This is the first time I’ve worn the outfit, and I will definitely wear a belt next time.  I think it will just pull the look together a bit more, and I hate a flimsy cloth belt, which is what this has.

I chose this knot-twist belt from Yoox because I wanted something unique.  You could also do a wide suede belt like this one.  I also like this skinny WHBM belt with a gold, in-line buckle.

Boots and Tights // To make this look appropriate for winter, I chose to pair it with my Loeffler Randall Gloria boots (one of the best purchases that I have ever made).  These Loefflers are discounted to $278 from $695, making them a total steal.  Can’t find your size?  Zappos has more sizes for $381.

The boots fall just under the skirt, so it makes for a sleek, uninterrupted leg line.  I also added a super dark tight because it’s February, but they aren’t necessary.

Earrings // These Missoma huggie pave claw hoops are on repeat in my house.  Missoma’s demi-fine jewelry is just so good.

Phone Case // I bought this Sonix phone case in tortoise and it’s a great option if you want something neutral, but interesting.  I also like this black leopard case.

As for styling, I hope to one day wear this dress with a lipstick people can see and a bit of winged eyeliner, but for today, I’m keeping it simple and wearing my reversible Wolford mask.  My hair’s a little short right now for an updo, but I would wear my hair in a low bun if it was longer.

Can you explain the fit and sizing from the fold? any insights? the clothes are lovely.

  2. Shannon says:

Would love to hear more about quality of The Fold. Love the looks of their clothes. How does it compare to MM LaFleur?

    • Diane says:

I’ve found it similar to MM Lafleur, or maybe a step above, but that may be because I’ve only tried structured dresses. I am usually a US 8 Tall, with broad shoulders, and the dresses I’ve tried in UK12/US8 with some stretch in them have fit perfectly.

    • Amy says:

It’s nicer than MM LaFleur imho. My seamstress always comments on how nicely made their things are when I take them in to be shortened. It runs very similar to other British brands regarding sizing – a bit long, not a lot of give in the structured pieces (so not great if you have curves) but the quality is there. If you ever get over to London the store is a total jewel box and you can make private shopping appointments, and they’ll tailor there.
I’m a size UK10 in the structured pieces, but can go down to an 8 in the jersey/a-line pieces. I’m 5’4 and an xs/s in mall brands, 4/6 in designer brands (very slight pear, so I size down in anything a-line). They have sales a few times a year, which is a great time to snap their things up for 30-50% off.

    • Laura says:

Agree with the previous poster that the Fold is better quality than MMLF (and also has a higher price point). I own a dress and top from the Fold and fabric quality is finer and tailoring is better. I size up two sizes from U.S. (4/6 U.S. and 8/10 UK) and the fit has been very good. Only complaint is the lack of free shipping both ways.

  3. Emily says:

The dress is super pretty and reminds me of something Kate “Middleton” would wear!

  4. Sandra says:

Love this dress. It almost makes me want to go back to my office!

  5. Kat says:

Love these outfit posts you are doing lately! I know you were averse to them before. did the mask help change your tune?

  6. Diane says:

How did you find the boots to fit? I see the website recommends sizing up due to a snug toebox, but since they’re final sale I’m a little hesitant to pull the trigger.

  7. Lauren says:

You look gorgeous! And thank you for talking openly about pandemic weight gain. I mostly see jokes about it, but as a woman trying to figure out what to wear, it has added to the everyday stress, and there is comfort in knowing we’re not in it alone. Love this look!

  8. Lucy says:

Daughter of a fine jeweler here! If you like the style of Missoma’s jewelry, you can find identical pieces for more affordable prices all over the internet – try Etsy, Shop Jeanne’s, even Amazon. Missoma’s pieces are common mass produced vermeil styles available at a lot of retailers; most should only run you $20-30. Happy hunting!

    • Crystal says:

I’m going to hype Catbird. Their ‘nice’ pieces can be pricey, but they also offer some beautiful, simple, all-gold and all-silver staples — like $44 for a simple, thin, gold ring (one worn by Meghan Markle) or about $150-225 for simple gold necklaces. I’ve found Catbird to be a great option if you want something simple but beautiful and sustainable (i.e., will last much longer than costume jewelry). My ‘nice’ jewelry just seemed like way TOO MUCH during this indefinite work from home period where I live in athleisure and rarely leave my house, but I also missed wearing jewelry — Catbird bridged the gap nicely. (You could probably find similar and cheaper items on Etsy, but I’m not always trusting of the jewelry sellers.)

    1. Thanks for the introduction to The Fold. Very smart.

    2. How do you make your hair so shiny?

  10. Dismal science says:

I covet clothing from The Fold. You look lovely — I think the dress looks better on you than in the picture on the right, where it somehow looks like too much pattern. Maybe it’s wearing it with the blazer that does the trick.

  11. ana says:

You look amazing! Really like your outfit posts – both for eye candy and authenticity & practicality. Thanks!

  12. C says:

Love the Fold and that’s a great dress. I really like their structured tops that you can wear with either smart work trousers or jeans and still look polished and put together. Their jersey dresses are fantastic for shoving in a gym bag and coming out unscathed.

  13. Niki says:

Chiming in to say I also love The Fold. I score sale pieces and I have found their size chart to be very accurate. I am 5’5″, 125 lbs, 32A chest, relatively broad shoulders and hippy for my size and I am a a US 4 / UK 8 in The Fold dresses. This gives me a bit of growing room, but the US 2 / UK 6 is a bit too snug so I size up. I have never purchased MM LaFleur, but I find The Fold to be the best quality I have in my closet (Banana, JCrew, Ann Taylor, etc.).

  14. Sierra delta says:

I bought the Wolford mask on Abra’s recommendation. I gulped at the price tag, but it’s the best (and only ????) purchase I’ve made all year! I have cotton and linen masks, but even without doubling up, they’re hard for me to breathe in. I wore two Wolfords when I got my Coronavirus shot Monday, and I actually breathed normally, and my glasses only fogged because the outside temp was single-digit.

    Love The Fold dress!

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
