Jan 15, 2021

Wearing makeup and a mask is a nightmare for my skin.  Maskne is real, and it is everywhere.  My skin needs a wash and a detoxifying mask.  And sleep, so much sleep.  Here are some of the best ones.

The Exfoliating One

Innisfree Pore Clearing Clay Mask

The Nourishing One

Clear Improvement Charcoal Honey Mask

The Calming One

Bioassance Tea Tree and Squalane Mask

The One That Fills Your Social Feed

Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay

*I have used this mask and it works well.

The Affordable One

Deep Down Detox Ultra Cleansing Mask

The Sheet Mask One

GlamGlow Bubblesheet Mask

C Hirons mentioned the cleanser below at the beginning of lockdown/quarantine. I have super sensitive skin but using this 1x week on my jawline and nose has really helped keep the maskne at bay. At drugstore price may be worth adding to the routine to see if it helps. FWIW I use it at night before a hearty moisturizer.

I’m using all dermatologist-prescribed products for adult-onset rosacea (yay, 30s!) and hormonal acne, but the only exceptions are my kate somerville spot treatment for maskne and this fabulous mask from aesop: https://www.nordstrom.com/s/aesop-parsley-seed-cleansing-masque/4363871

super intrigued by that sand & sky one!

I’m dealing with these same issues. Given the state of the pandemic where I live I’m not comfortable leaving home home for non-emergency medical care. Can I ask if the dermatologist’s suggestions are gentler than what you were using before? I’m wondering if I need to be babying my skin a little more.

See if she can do a virtual appointment and then try to book it when you have the best lighting/see if you can borrow a good webcam. I was mostly just using a very gentle cleanser prior to the dermatologist (I have dry/not oily skin) and various moisturizers; other than the occasional face mask and sometimes using toner, my routine was very simple.

Post-dermatologist diagnosis, it’s a very not-sexy routine including ditching my Cetaphil face wash and swapping for Sulfide Cleanser (yep, that’s a sulfur cleanser I use twice a day), put two prescribed topical creams on my rosacea daily, and use a prescribed cream at night for hormonal acne.

The good news is that all of these prescribed products are FREE under most health insurance plans. Highly going to a telehealth appt with a dermatologist just to get a real diagnosis. It’s probably saved me hundreds already in what I’d be spending on the latest promise to help with my acne.

  3. Mary says:

My favorite detoxifying mask is the Aztec Secret clay mask. Just mix with equal parts apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg’s.). You’ll briefly smell like a salad but your pores will be smaller than ever!

  4. Shanghaisue says:

I love the Innisfree one. I used to use the Origins Clear Improvement one, but the Innisfree exfoliates more without the slight burn of the Origins.

  5. Kim says:

Can’t remember where I heard about it, but I tried Josh Rosebrook’s active enzyme exfoliator mask and love it enough that I’ve bought it more than once. Have been doing it weekly for months now.
