Two Ways: Styling A Terry Sweatshirt

Jan 14, 2021

Can you wear a sweatshirt to work?  A few years ago this would have been unthinkable, but as styles relax and the pandemic continues, of course, you can.  Here’s how to style it.

Sweatshirt // Banana Republic’s French terry sweatshirt is a good choice for workwear.  The reason it does double-duty so well is because it has a heavier weight and good structure.

For the Office // The all ivory look is one of my very favorites.  It’s so crisp and fresh.  Here, I paired the sweatshirt with an affordable pencil from Tahari ASL.  I generally prefer a wider waistband on my skirts, so I would probably go with this one from Express.

To accessorize this look, I chose a fantastic pair of tortoise pumps.  These Steve pumps have a stable block heel and sleek look.  They also come in wide widths.

I always choose pearls with ivory.  I think it just lights up the face in a lovely way.  I chose these affordable Talbot’s studs, I might also choose these Ferragmo pearl studs with gold-tone backing for a bit more visual interest.

As for the bracelet, I chose this X-cuff from Noir.  It will look really chic with a pushed up sleeve.  The Noir brand is one of my favorites for fashion jewelry; I have a number of pieces from there.

Lastly, if you’re going to wear an all neutral palette, wearing lipstick brightens the look.  With my mask, I can’t wear lipstick right now, but I love Charlotte Tilbury’s Amazing Amal.

For Work from Home // Last Friday, I left work, went back to my hotel room, and put on a sweatshirt and leggings.  After a week in professional clothes (most of which are snug; thanks, COVID), I had never been so comfortable or grateful.  It made me miss working from home.

My favorite leggings are from Colorfulkoala.  I talk about them a lot, but when I find an affordable legging with pockets that I like as well as $98 Lululemon’s, I shout it from the rooftops.  I’m also waiting to give their joggers a try.

I own this North Face vest.  I never thought I would wear it as often as I do, but a global pandemic created some new fashion needs.  It’s warm enough for a spring walk, but not so hot that I can’t wear it around the house.

For some simple jewelry, I am reposting these Monica Vinader hoops from Monday’s post.  I just think they’re a really fantastic option for those who like white metal jewelry.  And I finished the look with my favorite Adidas Cloudfoam sneakers.  They’re comfortable, lightweight and easy to wear in or out of the house.

I love this post so much!! Great ideas!

  2. Emily says:

Obsessed with the Colorfulkoala leggings after buying them from your recommendation in a previous post.

  3. Sarah says:

Do you tuck in the front or leave it loose?

  4. Jessica says:

I’m wearing a pair of Colorfulkoala joggers at this very moment and can vouch that they’re divine. A bonus perk for fellow pregnant friends is that the material is so stretchy, I’m able to wear a fitted tank, pull them up over my bump, and have them stay put comfortably at 36 weeks (the fabric slips off bare skin, thus the tank top layer). They’re the greatest.

such a good tip! did you size up in the joggers for pregnancy? i’ve been on the hunt for affordable, comfortable pregnancy-friendly pants.

I LOVE this post! This post gives me all the pre-pandemic Capitol Hill Style feels even though I’m in leggings almost every day. Love the idea of a sophisticated sweatshirt dressed up or down.

Thanks, Abra, for continuing to blog right now, even when you have a ton on your plate. These posts are something I look forward to each day, and I’ve been following for 7-8 years!

P.S. You looked fab in that hot pink dress! 🙂

Thanks for the leggings recommendation, I purchased based on your earlier review and they are fantastic. I also tried the joggers, which are fine but I don’t love them (I find they get baggy at the knees after wearing for a bit).

What stockings would you pair with the first outfit?

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
