Two Ways: A Navy Blazer

Dec 30, 2020

I love the J.Crew Regent Blazer.  I bought the camel last year, and the navy a few months ago.  Both will feature heavily in my work wardrobe this session.  Here are a couple of ways I plan to wear the navy one.

Neither of these outfits are groundbreaking, but they both have a classic look that won’t go out of style.  And most of us own the majority of the pieces needed to recreate them.

Blazer // The J.Crew Regent blazer in four-season stretch is a professional workhorse.  It truly is a must-have, and my most recommended work item of 2019 and 2020.  Also in petite and tall, runs up to size 24.

You can snap up the black Regent blazer for half-price at Zappos.  Nordstrom also has it for $99 in grey, blue and black.

Upper Outfit // Navy and black together is one of my go-to combinations.  It gives you the same dark, professional look of all black with a little something extra.

For this outfit, I chose this deeply discounted BR blouse.  If it’s not available in your size, try this Land’s End tie neck blouse in both misses and plus.  Mix it with simple black pencil skirt, like this simple ponte pencil skirt from Ann Taylor also in petite and tall.

The accessories include a pair of fantastic black pumps from Able.  The shoes have a chunkier heel for stability, but the embossed toe-cap makes them anything but basic.  And for a bit of sparkle, I chose these Wynnie hoops with a unique beaded texture.

For this look, I would wear my hair down, however it naturally falls.  I would put on a bit of black eyeliner and a sheer berry lip.  Looking for a new eyeliner?  This one from Shiseido liner has a micro-fine tip that’s angled to make it easy to apply.

Lower Outfit // You cannot go wrong with a striped tee and jeans.  It’s basically impossible.  And this J.Crew striped tee in a boatneck style is my go to option.  Prefer a dark stripe?  Try this J.Crew tee instead.

I chose a skinny jean for this look.  As some of you know, I bought a pair of affordable pull on jeans a few months back.  I liked the concept so much (because, hey, COVID) that I purchased a better quality pair from NYDJ.  The pull on makes them a little more forgiving during this time of pandemic eating.  Also available in plus-size.

For the accessories, I started with these great (sale-priced) boots from Aquatalia.  The Aquatalia brand makes fantastic shoes and boots that are made with Italian-style construction and weatherproof materials.  They’re having a great sale right now, up to 75% off sale with code NEWYEAR75.

I picked these bee earrings because I thought they brought a bit of whimsy to the outfit.  And lastly, I tossed in a red lipstick from NARS because we could all use a little something to spice up our Zoom calls.

  1. I absolutely love all these type posts. I am active in politics as a candidate and a state committee member in my party. These posts give me inspiration and guide me on how to dress professionally, especially as a young person in politics. Also, one more thing, I have vision loss, so when you describe the colors of how black and navy for example go together, is extremely helpful. Thank you for all you do.

Thank you for this. I own both of these as well

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
