Monday Outfit: Madam Vice President-Elect Suits Up

Dec 7, 2020

On the Saturday after Election Day, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris stepped out onto the stage in a stunning Carolina Herrera suit.  In that moment, I started hunting for a pale-hued business suit.  And finally, after weeks of searching, one has appeared.

Oh, and the best part?  It’s on deep discount, so you can buy the entire look for under-$200 before shipping and tax.

The Suit // This blazer and pant suit from Ann Taylor is a slightly darker ivory than the suit MVP wore.  I think the deeper color makes it more wearable than a stark white suit would be.

The blazer is a modern double-breasted cut.  The black buttons help it blend with black blouses and shoes.  If that’s not a concern for you, replacing the buttons is an affordable alteration.  I recommend these light tortoise buttons.

The pants are a wider flare leg style.  Because I don’t wear pants often, I ordered them a size larger so that I can have them tailored to fit perfectly.  It’s an added expense, but I want them to be comfortable.

The suit comes in misses and petite.  It’s made of synthetic fibers, which is less than ideal.  But since this is an occasional suit, as opposed to a workhorse suit, I don’t mind that it’s not cotton or wool.

The Blouse // This mock neck blouse comes in the same color as the suit, so it should pair beautifully.  This blouse is also synthetic, but it has a slight satin sheen look to it.  And the v-neckline is a wonderful complement to the blazer’s neckline.

A white tie-neck blouse would also be a great option.  The lighter hue would give a monochromatic look.  You could also pair it with a sheer black blouse for a more dramatic contrast.

The Shoes // I chose this snakeskin heel because I wanted it to blend a bit better than an all black heel would have.  But this is a situation where you could wear your favorite black heels or flats with ease.  However, given the wide leg of the trouser, I would recommend a pointed toe.  It’ll give you a longer leg line and make you look taller.

The Bag // I own this Trapeze satchel from Cuyana.  It’s a big, useful work bag that you can overfill or keep lightly packed.  It’s almost-$400, but I’ve owned mine for four years, and with fairly regular use, it’s holding up well.

Looking for something under-$200?  I love the dramatic, modern shapes of Matt & Nat bags.  Their Kintla and Parallel satchels are both fabulous.

The Finishes // As you know, I’m a sucker for pearl earrings with white or ivory.  These Splendid Pearls from The Rack are a great price and look nice.  If pearls aren’t your thing, I highly recommend these crushed stone earrings for a touch of modern.

I completed the look with my favorite dramatic lipstick, Amazing Amal.  It’s a deep raspberry that easy to wear for impact without being overpowering.

Loved Kamala’s outfit and think she is Fantastic! Can’t wait for her and Joe to govern us out of these terrible times that this current administration has wrought..

  3. Opal says:

I’m going to be pedantic. Senator Harris is NOT the vice president. The Electoral College has not voted, so she is not even the vice president elect. The inauguration takes place in January 2021. Not until then is there a change in the executive administration.
