Two Ways: Wearing Fall Color

Oct 14, 2020

Rust has become one of my favorite wardrobe colors.  It looks great on many woman, and it’s a bit of an unexpected choice in a world filled with burgundy and navy.  So let’s style this rust sweater two ways.

Sweater // I like the mock neck, funnel neck sweater trend. They give you that turtleneck look without rubbing all over your neck and making you itch.  This sweater from Goodnight Macaroon has a very interesting horizontal weave pattern.  At <$60, it’s an affordable fall option.  The size range, however, is pretty limited running only S to L.

I also like this rust-colored Pieces cable knit and this waffle pullover from The Rack (also in plus).  This ballon sleeve sweater from Cable Stitch also caught my eye.  Plus-size?  Try this Ava and Viv sweater.  Petite? This BR sweater comes in a dark rust.

For Work from Home // I still love ecru-colored jeans for fall.  They’re softer than white, hide dirt marginally better, and look great with fall hues.  I chose this pair from Everlane are from their super soft collection and have a very comfy wide leg style.  NYDJ also has a skinny leg style.

Want an ivory trouser for work?  Talbots still has lined pants (God, bless them), also in plus size.

Prefer something totally relaxed?  I think this sweater would look incredible with a pair of oatmeal lounge pants.

I added a pair of leopard flats in a smaller print.  These flats are probably one of my favorite leopard pairs that I’ve ever seen because the color is nice and the print isn’t loud.

I finished off the look with these absolutely charming hoop earrings.  They’re affordable and subtle, yet still different.  They look really dainty and pretty on.

For the makeup, I like a very-hued wash here.  I think it plays with the rust color well, a red is gong to be too much.  So I chose Black Honey.  For the hair, I would probably wear it up because of the collar on the sweater.

For the Office // If you’re going into the office (and your employer is taking precautions that make you feel safe), I am jealous.  I’d love to get the heck out of this house for a few days a week.  Even if it is mostly to take my dresses for spin.

This J.Crew Icon trench is one that I just purchased to replace an old trench.  The quality is good.  It’s not excellent beyond measure, but I’m very happy with it.  The wider lapel is nice.  And it’s currently 35% off with code THEBEST.  For a more affordable option, H&M has a slightly slouchy trench that is worth a look.

I chose to do a one-tone look with this sweater.  This rust-colored skirt from Express is a nice option.  If you were planning a casual date night, I would try this satin front-slit skirt.  Plus-size?  This Modcloth a-line skirt is worth a look.

For the accessories, I chose these Argento Vivo drops that I’ve shown before.  If you’re looking for a simple earring that still has impact, these are them.

These Sarah Flint shoes are a great addition to a professional wardrobe.  They’re very chic and comfortable.  These Kate Spades, however, are about half the price.

This bag from Kate Spade Margaux bag keeps popping onto my radar.  It’s currently 40% off, so now might be a good time to snap it up.  It comes in several neutral colors.

For the makeup, I chose a different berry-hued lipstick.  This is Amazing Amal from Charlotte Tilbury and it so very beautiful on.  A great raspberry color.

Love your blog and have been following for a long enough time to remember when you bought your burberry trench and wrote a negative piece on a jcrew trench that was falling apart! What made you give a Jcrew trench a second shot? And also what are you doing with your amazing burberry trench now?

    • Belle says:

SO I have navy burberry trench, so I was looking for a brown one. My last J.Crew one, which I bought in ’13 I think did fall apart. But since Mickey Drexler left, I’ve been giving J.Crew another try. It’s not 07-08 quality, but it’s much better than it was from ’13-’16 when it was all just expensive fast fashion.

This trench has better material than my last one, it’s all cotton and you can feel it’s heavier. It also has wider seam allowances and a partial liner. So it’s a better product than they were selling in ’13. Is it Burberry quality, no. Is it a good buy for 35% off $228, yes.

I feel like I’ve been on a trench coat quest this fall. I’ve tried on and returned the JCrew Icon (I’m 5’4, and the waist hit not far under my bust which was not at all flattering), the two Hobbs trenches (both too light in color, and fairly shapeless), a lined Mackage one (the zip out down liner was a good idea, but on my frame added too much bulk) a Soia & Kyo one (pretty, but more modern than what I was looking for) and now have one from Brooks Brothers on order. It is apparently hard to find a classic, slimmer fit, tailored trench (unless you’re willing to drop Burberry money). And if you have a spare $3k laying around someone please buy the Nina Ricci cape trench . I guess retailers get bored of making the classics but it is really annoying when you’re trying to replace an old piece (2010~ Banana Republic in my case) and can’t find something comparable!

I’m 5’3″ and have a Brooks Brothers trench that fits perfectly. Hopefully yours works for you too when it arrives!

  2. Lindsey says:

Wow, I am stunned by these outfits. They are amazing!

  3. Just says:

Love the combinations–I am doing in reverse, bought rust color corduroy, so adding a ivory sweater. Might need a blazer…
Thanks Belle for your awesome ideas.

    • Belle says:

I think an ivory blazer in a heavier fabric would be beautiful. J.Crew also has a green double breasted you could try.

  4. Shanghai says:

Love both looks! You have such a great eye for monochrome looks that aren’t boring.

  5. Pam says:

THis is gorgeous. Could you suggest a color substitute for those of us who tend towards the cool colors and look awful in rust?

  6. Ana says:

Amazing lineup! The colors are beautiful together!

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
