That Twitter thread was no surprise but still enraging. Why do men still think this is okay???
I’ve only had this done to me twice: once by a woman, and once by a man. When I logically explained the issue to the man, he got it right away and asked that we both present (he had another issue he was talking about also). When I explained it to the woman, I got shouted at for holding her back. So I don’t know why people think this is okay, but we need to teach everyone to stop doing it and to start standing up for themselves.
I am not someone who really has personal goals other than be a good person, but I SO BADLY need my work goals to be put on hold. Intead, I am running urgent and highly-visible projects, in addition to doing the job of a position that the business won’t let us fill, in addition to struggling wtih immense depression that I haven’t been able to overcome even with continued modification of meds and therapy, anxiety (which, same), and all the other good stuff that is happening right now. Because when business is bad, we lay off people and expect everyone do to more with less and grow the business and fix all the pre-existing issues! WOOOO.
Sorry for the vent.
It’s okay. I took on too much at work last week, and by Thursday was chewing a Xanax at my desk, which is never the level I want my anxiety. Hoping you find some relief.
Thank you, Abra. I have upped my anti-depressant dose, gotten a medical cannabis card (and the cannabis for use outside of work hours to help me sleep), scheduled an appointment with my therapist, and joined a lawyer depression / mental health support group. Let’s hope something works!

Just here to say that you took the words right from my head. I’m in the exact same position at work. My boss recently made the comment that I should be grateful to have a job among other things.
I think conspiracy theories are a result of people sensing that there are systems of power controlling their lives that are much bigger than them, which is 100% correct, but they are obscured from us in a way that makes it very hard to see what those systems actually are. Racism, the patriarchy, capitalism, etc. are “conspiracies” in the sense that they are a huge structures that impact every aspect of our lives. But the conspiracy theories keep people from making systematic critiques of those who are actually in power. It makes sense that their popularity is exploding in a really chaotic time when there aren’t really leaders/movements offering a vision for systematic change.

In 2011 an employee tearfully approached me saying she heard from a security guard that our department would be closing. I was in a position of authority at the time and reassured her that I would certainly know if such a thing was planned and I had heard nothing of the sort. A month later the entire department was closed leaving 120 people unemployed. Always listen to the security guards. They know.
Well, that article about setting aside goals was timely… I was just talking with my roommate last night about how everything in my life seems to be on hold. I guess it’s ok to set some of it aside for now.
Thanks for the article about Columbus. I don’t know what it will take to actually cancel Columbus Day but posting articles like this one are a start. We all need to be educated about the crimes he committed and stop celebrating him as some sort of hero. Bravo, Belle, Bravo.
