Two Ways: Dressing Up Stretchy Pants

Oct 8, 2020

Whether you’re back in the office looking for comfortable basics or at home and sick of wearing leggings, I have the pants you need.  They have a stretchy waistband, a relaxed fit, and they are also machine-washable and wrinkle-resistant.  But they look like dressy trousers, so no one will ever know.

Pants // The Wesley Lounge pants from MM LaFleur are specifically designed to look like work pants but fit like a wide leg yoga pant.  The waist band is stretchy on the sides but flat in the front, so they look like regular trousers.

The fabric is called ‘origami tech’ so they resist wrinkles and are machine washable.  Making them the perfect pants for work travel or chasing kids at a playground.

My one complaint, and I have just one, is that the inseam is 30.5 inches.  This means that many women will need to tailor them or wear them with heels.  I needed mine hemmed for flats, so I bought some Heat n’ Bond hem tape and ironed myself a new hem.

MM LaFleur has a lot of great pants that would be comfortable and professional.  The only other pair that I can vouch for from personal experience are the Colby Joggers, which are also made of the origami fabric but have a slimmer leg.

Left // This outfit is business casual or work from home dressy.  I added a simple white button-down from Banana Republic.  Not feeling the collared shirt?  Try this BR poplin tunic, also in petite sizes.  It’s a little more relaxed, but still very professional.  Plus-size? Talbot’s makes their famous band-collar shirt in misses and plus.

This simple sweater from Marks and Spencer caught my eye for its modern, relaxed vibe.  I also like this Gap Shaker cardigan from Monday for something a bit longer.

These Birdie flats are as a comfortable as slippers.  I mean, you put them on and your feet thank you.  So if you’re looking for a shoe that is wearable outside the home and inside the home, these are them.

I chose these chevron hoops for a simple, but impactful look.  If you want something that fits closer to the ears, these Gorjana huggie hoops are fab.

Right // Need a suit that is comfortable and wearable?  This Moreland jacket from MM LaFleur is also made of the origami fabric and is cut to hide the stretchy part of the waistband.

A white and black-dotted top is a great compliment to a black suit.  It’s still basic, but has a little something extra.  This one from Marks and Spencer is an affordable option.  Banana Republic also has this great button-down.  Plus-size?  Try this Modcloth shirt with a brushstroke print.

If you’re in the market for high heels, these Madison 12-hour pumps from Banana Republic live up to their name.  Super comfortable and wearable all day.  Just don’t forget the suede protectant!

Finally, I chose these pearl earrings from Madwell.  I think the drop style with the gold-tone stud is a bit more modern than a traditional pearl stud.  I also love these huggie hoops with pearls.

If you’re looking for a full trouser cut pant that looks professional but is easy like a sweatpant you’ll love these. They run big – I’m usually a 6 in MM pants and I returned a 4 because I was too lazy to hem them and it was more volume than o wanted. The Colbys that Abra links are more my jam – slimmer leg, didn’t need hemming and generous pocket that fits an iPhone Xs.

HOW DO THESE COMPARE TO OTHER YOGA DRESS PANTS ON THE MARKET? I’VE BEEN WEARING BETA BRAND TO WORK FOR YEARS AND THEY’RE COMFY.

I can vouch for the Madison 12-hr pumps, I own about 6 pairs in various colors. Super comfortable right out of the box, and the price is right especially when BR is doing 40-50% off (I wouldn’t buy these at full price bc the quality isn’t there). It seems your link directs to the scotchguard though.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
