The Third Layer: What to Wear Over a Wrap Blouse

Sep 28, 2020

What is “the third layer”?  It’s the piece of clothing that completes the whole outfit.  The cardigan, jacket or blazer that takes an outfit from good to great.

This new feature shows you a foundation outfit with several toppers that can help you complete your look.  So let’s get started.

The Outfit // How amazing is this steel grey wrap blouse?  This Scotch and Soda top is such a statement piece.  For the office, I would pair it with a simple pencil skirt or trouser.  But for this look, I choice to stick with business casual and add a pair of dark denim jeans.

I like a higher waisted jean, and these AG Farrah Jeans are my favorite.  For an <$100 pair, try these NYDJ Firesky Jeans.  Plus-size?  Try these jeans from Lane Bryant.

These navy Rothy’s are a great pairing with jeans.  But if you want something a hair dressier, try the Juliette Flat from Coach and Four.  Wide feet?  Try these Vionic flats.

Upper Left // This cardigan from The White Company is perfectly styled.  I love the balloon sleeve and the chunky knit.  It’s relaxed, but very chic.  Plus-size?  Try this chunky cardi from The Drop.

Middle Left // All Saints leather jackets are the best ones.  This Kassia moto jacket is pretty fantastic.  For a less expensive option, I found this dark green Guess jacket and this Guess pale pink jacket.

Lower Left // My favorite LL Bean utility jacket gives the satin blouse a more casual feel.  The jacket comes in a selection of colors, sizes plus and petite.

Upper Right // Need a sophisticated work look?  This collarless white Mango blazer is a lovely option.  The complementary necklines looks very pulled together.

Middle Right // I cannot say enough good things about this Banana Republic sweater blazer.  The shape is really fantastic and flattering.  It’s comfy and easy but still professional.  It runs to size XXL, and is available in petite.

Lower Right // This black wrap sweater from N. Peal is a feminine third layer option.  If you’re looking for a more affordable wrap sweater, & Other Stories has you covered.  Their wrap cardi comes in several colors, including black, ivory, and pink.

Do you have a favorite third layer?  Make a suggestion in the comments for how you’d top this wrap blouse outfit.

I love this idea! I get stuck in a rut wearing the same pieces together sometimes. I like how your putting the outfit together with different jackets showcases the versatility of the pieces, as well as how a particular jacket can change the entire feel of the ensemble (feminine, chic, cool, etc.).

What a great post – really like this (both the third layer idea and also the options you chose)! I barely know how to dress myself these days – I’m both amused and sad as I write this.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
