Monday Outfit: Dressing Up Leggings

Sep 14, 2020

Leggings are going to be my go-to attire for the rest of 2020, so I’m on the hunt for styling ideas.  I want the outfits to look pulled together but relaxed.  This outfit from Not Your Standard via Death by Elocution caught my eye because I love chic outerwear, and nothing is more chic than a collarless coat.

This look layers simple basics under a dramatic coat to give the outfit a lift.  The original outfit featured a pair of skinny black jeans, but who’s wearing jeans right now?  Here is how to create the look.

Coat // Cocoon coats were very popular a few years ago, but less so this season.  I did find this simple, affordable ivory coat from Mango.  For something with a contrasting zipper, Andrew Marc has an ivory coat with a dramatic black zipper.  If you’re searching for a more classic shape, try this Iris & Ink coat or this Express coat.

Sweater // The inspiration image features a mock neck sweater, but I thought the asymmetric hem on this Express pullover was a cool look.  Other sweaters that caught my eye include this chunky mock neck from Zulily, this Rebecca Taylor sweater with bow accents and this oversize mock neck from & Other Stories.

Plus-size?  Try this All Worthy sweater or this rib-knit sweater from Jessica Simpson.  Petite?  Try this Vince Camuto sweater or this Banana Republic sweater.

Leggings // Still wearing my Colorfulkoala leggings with the pockets pretty much non-stop.

Accessories // These Veja sneakers are a nice mix of athletic and stylish.  Black sneakers are look a bit cooler than white ones with leggings.  I also wear my Rothy loafers with leggings.

I chose these silver bracelets from Kate Spade and Nine West for an easy accent piece.  I’d also add these simple rope-effect hoops from Argento Vivo.

For the purse, I chose this great flap-crossbody from Vince Camuto.

Styling // When I wear makeup now, which is only a couple of times per week, I’m wearing this Honest Beauty CC Cream.  I brush it on with an Artis mini-palm brush, which gives you a light, even coverage.  I just add a bit of blush/bronzer from Wander and mascara and call it a day.

For the hair, I’m still using my hot rollers almost every day.  It gives me a sense of normalcy to style my hair.

Thanks for this! My office isn’t going back to in-person work until at least March 2021, and there is no way I’m wearing real pants before then. Leggings 4evah, but I still want to look cute.

This outfit would be awesome with the JCrew collar less sweater jacket in ivory too and that one goes on sale a lot. Thanks for the comfy work from home but pulled together outfit idea.

This is great. It will be a season of leggings for me too (as I type I am in my Colorfulkoala leggings about to take an exam). Love getting ideas to keep me looking put together for when I actually get to leave my computer.

I just got these Colorfulkoala leggings in the mail, purchased based on your recommendation. They are wonderful. So soft! And they fit so nicely. I wish they would have a full length version that has a pocket, but I don’t see one. But otherwise these are five star leggings.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
