Two Ways: A Pretty Floral Top

Jul 29, 2020

On days when life seems a bit bleak, I try to wear bright colors and prints.  There’s nothing like a punch of bold color to add a bit of joy to your day.  And this floral-print top from & Other Stories is a fantastic option for bringing a bit of fun into your work from home attire.

Top // This floral top from & Other Stories has a wonderful mix of pink, coral, pale yellow and sage.  It’s pretty, vibrant, and perfect for summer.  I love the wrap shape and the light peplum.  And everything is better with a delicately puffed sleeve.  Plus-size?  This Madewell top comes in a selection of calming blue florals.

Left // Boyfriend jeans are back this year thanks to COVID.  This style is when you need something looser-fitting than a skinny, but with a casual vibe.  These ankle-cropped 7 for All Mankind jeans are on my wishlist.  For something under-$50, try these slim and broken-in jeans from J.Crew or these INC curvy-fit jeans.  Plus-size?  These Carrie rolled hem jeans look like a steal.

I wanted to keep this look really simple while playing up the fun, bright color palette.  These Seol + Gold earrings are so wonderful.  Small, delicate and with a pop of pretty pink, they are just so perfect for a work Zoom call.  A little bit fun, but totally understated.  I also love these Amalfi blush enamel hoops from Gorjana.

For jewelry, I also added these super simple Sterling Forever bands.  Wear them stacked together or spread them out.  They come in six sizes, so buy two pair and wear them on different fingers.

The cork bag from McClintock is just so fun.  I also like that you can easily disinfect the metal handle and, if you keep the bag light, you can wear it on your wrist and never have to set it down.

Lastly, the sandals are the perfect minimal summer sandal.  These TKEES sandals are so light and comfortable, I wish I had purchased two pair.  And at <$75, I still might.

For the hair, I want something that captures the fun vibe — maybe a wave or a braided updo.  For the lipstick, a coral-pink gloss like Dior Lip Glow.

Right // This outfit is more of a work look.  So for those of you who are back in the office, casual Friday is calling.  This look has a lot of wonderfully bright colors, but paired with softer neutrals to bring them down to Earth a bit.

I added a fantastic BR sage green cardigan to play up the pale green accents in the blouse.  This stretch-cotton cardigan comes in 11 colors, so if you need a neutral or a pop of color, give it a look.  It’s a very feminine, simple option.

These cropped wide leg white jeans were everywhere this spring.  BR’s version are sale-priced and perfect for finishing up the summer, and could easily be worn into fall.  They run up to size 35.

You could also wear a cream jean here if white is too stark for you.  I like these Free People Laurel Canyon jeans.

These Argento Vivo earrings have kept going in my cart for weeks.  I need to hurry up and buy them.  So simple, but with a strong impact on a Zoom call, they’re wonderful.  And they also come in white metal for you silver lovers.

For the shoes, I chose a chunky block heel for comfort.  These Marc Fisher heels are an affordable shoe that looks great with pants and jeans.  They also come in nine great colors.

Lastly, this AllSaints crossbody bag has the same shape as the beloved and coveted Gucci Disco Bag.  But the sub-$200 price makes it a much better choice.  The bag comes in five colors and, because it’s AllSaints, you know you’re getting a well-made bag.

For the hair, I would sweep it up into a soft updo.  This low-bun with criss-cross is an easy one for medium to long hair.

This is a thread jack, but I’m hoping there are some gardeners on here. My husband and I recently realized we need some shade perennials for our yard; we’re hoping to plant them this fall. I’m looking for reputable websites to order from. I usually use Old House Gardens and Brent & Becky’s Bulbs for bulbs, but they have limited options for shade plants.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

Abra, love your blog and have been reading (and buying your recommendations) for years!

Not sure where you are, but I got this in the spring from Home Depot online – supposedly hardy in VA (TBD – this will be the first winter), deer resistant and a shade loving flower, but haven’t seen it in stock anywhere since and I would LOVE to buy more because they are thriving, and critically, not eaten: https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/begonia/bossa-nova-pure-white-begonia-boliviensis

I have never ordered from them, but I like burpee.com (perennials tab) – you can filter by hardiness zone, shade or sun, bloom season, etc. It was really helpful when I was trying to plan for some more shade loving, deer resistant, nontoxic to child flowers.

For live plants, I was very pleased with the mailing by Costa Farms and Proven Winners. Very securely packaged and the plants arrived in good health.

Just wanted to say thank you for continuing to put put such wonderful content during this weird, taxing time. It’s giving me life!

I love both these outfits. So pretty. My only question is: I never manage to successfully wear a cardigan over a top like that. The sleeves clash. What am I missing?

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
