Monday Outfit: Neutral Basics with Style

Jul 20, 2020

Sometimes what makes an outfit extra special are small styling details that take basics for classic to chic.  This outfit is made up of simple, easy pieces that you probably already have in your wardrobe.  It’s perfect for Zoom calls now and casual Fridays when we head back to the office.

This photo that I found on Pinterest is a good illustration of how to use small details to upgrade simple pieces.  The turned up cuff on the jean makes them more stylish.  The pushed up sleeve has that too-cool-for-school casual look.  The relaxed jewelry has a bit of effortless chic.

The T-Shirt // Theory Pocket Tee // This relaxed tee is the perfect not-too-tight, not-too-loose fit.  For something a bit more affordable, this v-neck Madewell pocket tee or this Everlane tee.  I think the tee in the inspiration photo is a boatneck style.  So I found this Soft Surroundings tee that has a longer cut and a fabulously structured shape.

Jeans // Madewell Perfect High-Rise Ankle Jean // Lighter colored jeans are something I snubbed my nose at for a few years, but something about them has pulled me back in.  Maybe I’m nostalgic for the early-90s, or perhaps I’m just in the mood for something different.  These Madewell jeans are a great option for under-$100.

The inspiration photo is actually a light-colored pinstripe pant.  J.Crew has a pinstripe jean in misses’ size.  Old Navy has one in plus-size.  If you’re looking for something really different and fresh, this might be a good option for you.

Blazer // Woodville Textured Blazer // Recognize this blazer from this morning?  I just love the peplum and the inverted notch collar.  I like that the blazer has a little something extra.

If you’re looking for a simple basic, Boden’s Smyth Ponte Blazer is a simple, relaxed basic.  If you’re in the market for a high-quality, slightly splurgy piece, this Cinq a Sept blazer with pushed up sleeves comes in seven colors and is utterly chic.  Pair it with this color-matched satin camisole for a sophisticated evening look.

Shoes // Women’s Modern Tassel Mule // I wanted to keep to the inspiration image, so I chose these tassel mules in white.  It’s not a shoe I would reach for myself, but I think it’s a really unique and adventurous option.

For me, I would probably go with these Sam Edelman horse-bit loafers with fold down heels.  They have a lovely blend of masculine and feminine style.  Wide feet? The Edelman’s also come in wider widths.

Jewelry // Blok Rainbow Bracelet and Monica Vinader Cord Bracelet // We spend a lot of time talking about shiny baubles, but there’s a place for casual jewelry in your wardrobe.

Roxanne Assoulin is a big name in jewelry right now.  Her bracelets are made up of brightly colored enamel beads.  This Blok bracelet is an affordable take on the same look.  It’s a fun pop of color to bring a bit of joy to your jewel box.

The second bracelet is a woven cord bracelet.  Monica Vinader makes cord bracelets in several colors.  For a woven red bracelet for under-$15, check out this one from Amazon.  I have a similar one, and have been wearing it regularly.

Hair and Makeup // This is a simple look, wear your hair in a relaxed, natural style.  It’s a good look for busy morning with next-day hair and a bit of dry shampoo.

I haven’t been wearing much makeup.  Between masks and a lack of energy for a full-face of makeup, I’ve been wearing correcting Cicapair cream, a bit of mascara, and nothing else.  So whatever your easy, slightly pulled together look is, do it.

This is a GREAT outfit, love the whites for a summery breezy feel. I love myself a loafer and that is a bold loafer choice! For another fun loafer I have a neutral snakeskin loafer mule from J. Crew that really steps up your loafer game. Fit note: I had a pair of Everlane loafers and I found they were pretty narrow and pinched quite a bit, along with being very stiff. I loved their look but every time I wore them I could barely walk by the end of the day. Also even with this minimal amount of wear the soles started peeling very quickly.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
