The Weekly Edit: Just Climb

May 1, 2020

This week was a bit of a rough one.  We’re all confronting the changing landscape and asking how this “now normal” will impact our daily lives.  And this was a week of big decisions.

I was building a career that I loved.  Some legal work, some political work, some blogging.  But with campaigns pressing pause and law firms scaling back, I made the decision to begin looking for full-time employment.

It doesn’t feel like a defeat.  It feels simply like what needs to be done.  I’m trying to be optimistic about it.  I enjoy working with people and being in an office.  So it’s time to chart a new path forward.

What does that look like?  It’s too soon to tell.  But it’s up to me to be open to what’s next.

Some days, I’m in dresses.  Some days, I’m in leggings.  Some days, I summon myself to put on a pair of jeans.  So I need tops that work with denim or leggings, and this Treasure & Bond Drapey Shirt is perfect.  It’s a relaxed cut, an unfussy fabric, and just an easy top.

Treasure & Bond has many great, casual tops.  I like their Dobby blouse and their curved hem tee (fab with leggings).

This Sports Illustrated article cover story is a stunner.  How does a man convicted of murder find redemption?  And will anyone believe his transformation?  Set aside 15-minutes, and give this a read.

I noticed them last year: wrist wrinkles.  Clearly caused by the fact my hands are typing on a keyboard for 10+ hours per day, the wrinkles frustrate my vanity.

To minimize their appearance and hopefully slow the aging process a bit, I started applying leftover serum to my hands at night.  It helped, but it didn’t fix.  So I picked up these Silicone Hand Pads that reduce the appearance of wrinkles by allowing serums to penetrate deeper and skin to stay more hydrated.

Apricot makes a line of silicone pads for face and body to help minimize wrinkles.  Use them with your favorite hyaluronic acid serum for best results.  I’ve also read that using silicone pads can help minimize scar damage, so I may try these under-eye pads on the acne scars on my cheeks.

I have listened to one audiobook in my life, but Hitha has me convinced that I need to try libro.fm.  This book, The Happy Ever After Playlist, about a dog who sets up his owners looks like a light read.  And goodness knows we could all use some lightness right now.

    Sigh. All the unexpected changes….

My husband works at Mayo clinic in MN and oh the irony of them having to furlough 20,000 employees because there isn’t enough business to keep one of the world’s best hospitals going during a world wide pandemic…

I just got a seasonal job in the garden center at Lowe’s. It came out of nowhere really, but seemed like a good idea, given the furlough and the craziness that is this world currently. I’m actually looking forward to watering plants and being surrounded by them. Mostly because it will get me out of house, and since our governor just added another two weeks to our shelter in place, I will appreciate that watering even more.

Thank you to your family for helping to make Mayo Clinic what it is. At least three generations of my family (myself included) and many of our friends have traveled there for their superior care and cutting edge research and treatment; Mayo Clinic quite literally saved my mom’s life and she is happy and healthy 15 years later. Our family members are loyal donors and hope the Clinic stays open to help many many more generations. We appreciate the incredible work of the Mayo staff; it’s a medical facility like no other that I’ve visited.

That should be a fun job. My Mom used to work at a nursery and she always enjoyed it.

In the same boat, hang in there. Lost my job yesterday that I only started January 2020 after being unemployed for half of 2019. (insert scream emoji here). On the East Coast, so everything on hold right now. Thanks for your blog.

Thanks for sharing the story about Jack Murphy, very thought provoking. Two close members of my family were murdered, and while I don’t give their killers much thought for the sake my own mental health, I mostly hope that no other family is hurt the way mine was. If we had to lose them, let them be the last people taken by those hands. But who decides who is redeemed and who is not?

Good stuff. Thanks for keeping it real as always.

Maybe I’ll just start reading that happy ever after story right now haha.
