Thursday Outfit: A Classic White Button-Up

Apr 23, 2020

My goal is to create outfits during this weird, WFH season is to create outfits that work just as well now as they will later.  This classic combination is just that kind of outfit.  It’s perfect for spring or fall.  And most of us have these pieces in out closet already.

Shirt. Chico’s Roll Tab Sleeve Tunic ($90) // Don’t count Chico’s out for well-made classic pieces.  This roll-tab tunic is a great casual piece.  I also like the look of this Knit Back tunic.  Sizes run from misses to plus, and can run a little big.

For a more relaxed look, I recommend this Madewell drapey oversize tunic.  For a different color, try this striped tunic from Ruth.

Jeans. Madewell Toothpick Jean in Fresh Water ($128) //  I don’t usually go for the lighter washes, but they’re very trendy this year.  So if you want a fresh take on denim — straight out of the late 80s — this trend might be for you.  They also come in tall and petite.

Madewell also has a slightly darker wash called Glacier Lake that’s a bit more palatable.  I also like these raw hem jeans from Frame.  And for the plus-size ladies, try these Seven7 jeans from Lane Bryant.

Shoes. Cole Haan Red Dahlia Flats ($80) // A colored flat is a wonderful way to add a pop of color to an outfit.  Red is a foolproof choice with a simple outfit like this.  These red flats from Frye are also worth a look.

Want another color?  Try coral, or green, or cobalt.  Wide feet?  Try these Trotter’s flats.

Bag. Steve Madden Harlo Hobo Bag ($50) // This hobo bag is a wonderfully relaxed option.  I chose something with a little more structure than the inspiration image.  If you want a slouchier hobo bag, try this Aubre Knotted Bag or this Ebon hobo bag.

Sunglasses. Ted Baker Cat Eye Sunnies ($45) // Tortoise oversized sunglasses are a fabulous option for most face shapes.  These Ted Baker sunglasses are cool.  These discounted Gucci sunglasses and these affordable Vince Camuto sunglasses also caught my eye.

Jewelry. Club Monaco Textured Bangle ($50) and Sterling Forever Pave Hoops ($33) //  How fantastic is this bangle bracelet?  I love the textured edges.  So chic.  Club Monaco has fantastic jewelry.  It’s all fashion forward but still timeless.  This bangle bracelet and resin link earring are just phenomenal.

Sterling Forever is the brand to look into if you need classic pieces.  These pave hoops are lovely.  And the brand stocks a lot of great basics at <$50 prices.  These huggie open hoop earrings are fabulous.

Oh I love this look, so crisp and summery! I love that light wash color in denim in the Summer as well, it’s actually surprisingly hard to find the perfect shade of light wash jean. Just a note that it’s a J. Crew jean and not a Madewell jean that’s linked.

  2. Lauren says:

I love this look but always get irrationally annoyed when the front of a long crisp shirt gets wrinkly from sitting. Any tips?

  3. Joanna says:

Love this these posts. Exactly what I need! Thank you

  4. Allison says:

I wore an almost identical outfit to teach a Zoom class last week, and while the red shoes seemed a bit silly, because no one else could see them, they did make me feel happy and out-together.

I want to be someone who wears white button-ups, but the transparency (meaning: bra outlines) drive me nuts! I’ve tried layering a nude-colored camisole underneath, but that just means (1) I’m often then too warm, and (2) then I just have visible camisole outlines, which still ruins the clean lines of the look. Am I missing some obvious trick? Maybe my skin matches available bra colors less well (probably not that, as I’m just a standard shade of pale), or the brands I’m trying for the shirts are the wrong brands? Suggestions welcomed.

Oh, and cute outfit suggestion, Abra.

Try buying from retailers designed for women over 50. They usually have thicker fabrics. Brooks Brothers in particular, and Talbot’s.

Perfect outfit inspo! I love the pop of red!

After seeing it showcased here a couple of times, I finally broke down and bought the Chico’s shirt. I’m a believer! The fabric and buttons are sturdy, the collar is crisp, and it’s generous on the hips (a worry for me). This is a staple piece.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
