These days it’s not easy to find things that bring me joy.  My dogs.  Pruning peony bushes with Kyle.  And a freshly cleaned home are the first things that come to mind.

Because now that we’re home all.the.time, keeping things tidy is critical to my sanity.  And the tool that I love more than any other for keeping my space clean is my Dyson cordless vacuum.  Every time I use it, I’m glad I bought it.  It makes quick work of hair on the bathroom floor, crumbs in the kitchen, and countertop crumbs.

I have this Dyson V7 Cordless vacuum; it’s an older model, but it does a great job.  I’m hoping someone buys me the V10 Animal for my birthday.  Yes, I’m fairly obsessed with my vacuum.

I have twin three year-olds at home. And for safety reasons, our beloved cleaning lady is on hiatus (we are paying her). I just bought the V10 absolute. It should be here on Friday and I am extremely excited.

I also bought and have been reading (and enjoying) Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House by Cheryl Mendelson. I am a progressive feminist and I have truly enjoyed spending more time on the “domestic” sphere of my life during this time. Which has been a pleasant surprise.

Thanks for being a lovely corner of the internet!

Abra, this Washington Post article is just beautiful, thank you so much for sharing it. These stories of humanity are what I’m craving right now. I want to hug them, reassure them, party with them, these women are amazing! Jennifer and Joi are a mood for sure.

How well do the V7 and V10 work on carpeted floors?

  4. Meg says:

I loved that Post article about the women living alone during this. I live alone, and I also know the last day I touched anyone. I’m feeling some complicated feelings about the fact that my boyfriend lives a few miles from me but we’re not seeing eachother in person. It sucks, but I think the lockdown regulations are very clear. I sometimes think it would be easier mentally to be single. On the other hand, I truly love living alone, and work from home is way easier without another person around.

You are doing something really important. It is hard. I hope it helps you to know that you are saving lives, perhaps of people you will never meet or know about it. As potentially one of those people (don’t know where you live, don’t know the possible chain of connection between us over time) I say to you, “THANK YOU.”

      • e says:

Seconding this. I know it’s lonely and scary and and can make you feel powerless, but choosing to self-isolate right now is such an ethical and brave, empowered decision. I think you will be proud of yourself when you can reflect later, but I completely understand if you can’t “tap into” those good feelings now. Hang in there and thank you!

  5. Monica T says:

I always Instagram my boring life: baking! gardening! So GLAMOROUS! But I do feel vaguely guilty about being so boring normally, so I’m glad to hear I’m fulfilling my moral obligation now. This is my boring hobbies time to shine!

  6. Kelly says:

Thanks for the Post article. I’m living alone at this moment in history, and it’s so weird. Even weirder is that no on seems to be talking about how weird it is. I haven’t seen a familiar face in real life, not though a video chat, in a month.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
