Tuesday Outfit: A Bit O’ Business Casual

Mar 31, 2020

Not knowing how long all of this will last, I am sometimes at a loss for content.  So today, I thought I would recreate business casual outfit that I really love.  Because sometimes, all you can do is what feels right in the moment.

With a knit blazer, a versatile blouse, and a comfortable jean, this outfit is good for now or later.  And the mix of neutrals can be worn in fall, winter, or spring.

Jacket. This J.Crew Sophie Sweater Blazer is very comfortable and relaxed.  For a more traditional blazer, the J.Crew Regent Blazer is a great choice.  Other selections include this Topshop Marled Blazer and this Talbot’s wool blazer.

Blouse. The Sonia Striped Blouse is an absolutely fabulous piece from Derek Lam that is now on super sale.  Want to give the outfit a bit of spring style?  Skip the black stripes and choose this navy surplice blouse from Splendid or this NYDJ blouse.  Plus-size? Try this Michael Kors blouse.

Jeans. I’ve posted these Wit & Wisdom jeans before, but they’re worth mentioning again.  Just over $50, fitted, but not too tight, and super flexible. I love the cut and the height of the rise, and did I mention the price?

Wit & Wisdom has lots of styles, all at good prices.  These comfy jeggings are also a good choice, and they come in regular and petite.  Plus-size? Check out their stretch skinny jeans or their Itty Bitty bootcut jean.

Accessories. Classic Ray-Ban Aviators are my sunglasses of choice in the summer. There’s nothing like them.

I picked these simple hoop studs because they’re classic with a twist, and they’re an affordable $18.  They also come in silver.  I also like this AllSaints stud and hoop set.

This Daniel Wellington watch is a simple, versatile piece.  It also comes with a white face.  Have an Apple Watch?  Rebecca Minkoff has a wonderful selection of watch bands.

Lastly, I chose these Everlane 40-Hour Flats.  With a cushioned insole and rubber outsole, these are very comfortable and flexible.  They’re also 25% off this week.

I’m balking at supporting Everlane right now- they market themselves as transparent and repeatedly promised their employees that there would be no layoffs, and then laid off a large number of their employees.

    • Jules says:

      good to know!

    • Emma Hollister says:

The layoffs are specifically targeted at employees who are attempting to form a union so it’s not just that they went back on their word but they’re also engaging in illegal union busting!

I love Everlane (honestly – I’m currently wearing one of their sweaters) but until they remedy this, I’m definitely not going to be buying from them.

    • Lindsey says:

Transparency can’t predict a pandemic. Cuyana has laid off half of its staff, too. So have zoos, contractors, and companies in every other industry I can think of. Companies that thought they could weather the worst are realizing that they cannot now that they see what a world of no sales looks like.

Honestly, if you like Everlane, or any other retailer, and you have the funds, you should probably support them now so that they exist to hire those laid off people back in a few months. At least…that is how it feels right now in the Bay Area, where our shelter order was just extended to May 3.

Good luck to every company out there. I can’t support you with my dollars because I’m scared my husband and I won’t have jobs in another week.

      • Maddy says:

Agree with your comment, but if the comment above that they’re targeting union organizers specifically with these layoffs is true, then that’s a whole different story. I can continue to support a company facing difficult decisions in a pandemic. I can’t support companies taking advantage of a pandemic to infringe on workers’ rights.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
