A cool, duster-length cardigan is the perfect topper for spring. Wear it to stay warm on chilly mornings, and in chilly offices, and then take it off for Happy Hour. Here are four ideas for how to style it.
Sweater. Aire Duster Cardigan
This pretty BR duster cardigan comes in a handful of lovely colors, but this neutral sandy beige is my favorite. The length is the perfect mid-thigh length to wear over jeans or with dresses. The longer length elongates the figure and is very flattering.
Plus-size? This Old Navy oatmeal sweater and Amazon lightweight cardigan are both nice. Petite? The Aire cardigan is available in petite. Expecting? Try this Motherhood Maternity cardigan.
One. Soallure Knee Length Dress // Sam Edelman Hazel Pumps // Le Parmentiere Satchel Bag // Jenny Bird Wrap Ring // Ettika Starburst Lariat
Given the deep sand color of the cardigan, I wanted to use it for a monochromatic look. This dark-brown Soallure dress is a good choice. If you prefer something paler, this tan Donna Morgan dress has a great look to it.
To keep with the monochromatic theme, I chose these tortoise heel. It’s in the same color family, but a bit different. If you prefer a shorter heel, these Ann Taylor tortoise slingbacks are phenomenal.
To close out the look, I added this glamorous satchel bag. The lariat necklace can be worn to complement the v-neckline or can be shortened to mimic a crewneck. As for how to style the look, I would wear my hair down in a loose wave. I would also add a bit of bronzer to my face for contour because tan colors can wash people out.
Two. T Tahari Edie Top // BR Washable Pencil Skirt // BR Ankle Strap Pump // Frieda Rothman Hoops
Black and tan is a classic, simple combination. I like the mix of textures with the silk top, the smooth skirt, and the knit cardigan. It’s a lovely pairing that never goes wrong.
This T Tahari blouse is one of my all-time favorites, and it’s under-$75. If you prefer a dress, the same shallow v-neckline is offered on their very popular, affordable Tonya pleat-shoulder dress. If you’d like a more feminine, slightly more casual style, try this black Ralph Lauren shirt dress.
To finish the look, I added these easy hoop earrings which hit all the right notes with a hint of black. And this ankle strap pump is a great way to finish the look.
As for the hair, I would wear it up, but not too tight. This knotted ponytail bun is a good option.
Three. Harris Wharf London Shirtdress // Nisolo Huarache Sandals // Mark & Graham Italian Zipper Tote // Cult Gaia Melina Earrings
The sheer, soft cotton dress under the knitted sweater is a wonderful combination. The differently weighted materials blend together for a relaxed, effortless look. On those spring days when it’s still chilly in the shade, this look is perfect.
This shirtdress is beautiful, but it’s a little pricey. This sleeveless Tahari dress and this Everlane cotton shirt are both fabulous. Plus-size? I like this Public Desire shirtdress and this Brooke Shields dress.
I chose these Huaraches because this style was one of my favorites when I was growing up. I loved the easy, Bohemian feel, and I loved that my Mom wore this style when she was young. I think maybe it’s time to bring them back.
To finish the outfit, I added a navy tote bag. I think it lightens the look a bit without diverting attention. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, this Tommy Hilfiger tote is also nice.
For the hair, I would wear it in a half-up style with some textured waves. For the makeup, I would make sure I was wearing red nail polish, I like OPI’s Thrill of Brazil.
Four. Mariah Hoop Earrings // Iris & Ink Silk Blouse // Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans // Sarah Flint Natalie Flats // 12-Hour Leather Tote
I love a blue blouse with blue jeans. This silky Iris & Ink top is a nice option. This classic Brooks Brother blue oxford is also a great option. The key is to choose something pale blue and fresh.
These Banana Republic jeans are supposed to be very comfortable. The stretch fabric is designed to move with the body without stretching out or losing fit. Or freshen up the look with a pair of white jeans instead of the traditional blue.
I added these red Sarah Flint flats for a bit of color. I own these, and I like them. For something more affordable, these Sam Edelman flats are a really slick choice.
For accessories, I chose these chain-link hoop earrings and this simple tote. Utility with a classic look, nothing too over the top.
For the hair, something easy and natural. For the makeup, I’d just wear a bit of tinted moisturizer, a dab of blush and mascara.

Something about long cardigans screams “housecoat” to me. I’ve seen a few folks able to pull them off in a professional environment, but have yet to find one on me that doesn’t look super frumpy or like all I’m missing are some rollers in my hair.
I love them now, but when I first started wearing long cardigans to work I found that I felt more work appropriate choosing sleeker cardigans with more structured pieces beneath them. For example, a black long cardigan in a smooth (not chunky) knit with a collared shirt, tailored pants, and pointy heels. It also helped me to wear styles that defined the waist beneath so I didn’t feel like I was a blob.
I gradually branched out and now loooove long cardigans and wear them in place of blazers on casual work days, but it took some adjusting initially. I’m willing to do it for the sake of cozy clothing though!
I love the color but I feel like there was a missed opportunity to introduce some pattern here with that lovely shade.
Loved this. Thanks for doing these!
This is so good!!! Almost makes me wish I still worked in an office with a professional dress code!
Great pairings! Love also that you add hair and makeup tips for an all-in-one look.
Love the shade on that Soallure dress but wish it came in bigger sizes. Any other options you can across?
Didn’t see any, probably because it’s spring and this is more of a fall color.
That Everlane cotton dress is lovely and effortless. I find myself wanting to have a collar with shirt-dresses for a more classic look… I don’t know, the mandarin collar is everywhere right now and I don’t think it’s my personal cup of tea.
