The Range: Eyebrow Pencils

Mar 6, 2020

Filled in brows really frame the face.  Whether you pluck, wax, or tweeze, pencils and pomades shape and define eyebrows.  Here are some different options from Sephora splurges to drugstore picks, these are my favorites.

The Best Splurge

Tom Ford Brow Sculptor ($54)

Yes, the price seems outlandish.  It is.  But it comes with a refill, so it’s $27 each.  It also lasts forever.  I purchased this in September, and haven’t even had to switch the refill yet.

Widest Selection of Shades

Brow MVP Super Fine Pencil ($20)

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty is known for making strides toward inclusivity.  This pencil comes in 14 shades from blonde to deep black.  The toothbrush-style brush on the end makes for naturally shaped brows.

Best Pomade

Glossier Boy Brow ($16)

Glossier’s Boy Brow is a good product.  I use the clear when I don’t wear makeup for a bit of shape.  If you like a natural, but styled, look, this is for you.

Best Drugstore Buy

NYX Fill & Fluff Pomade Pencil ($8)

This pencil and brush combo is the best product the I’ve found for under-$10.  The pencil has a thick, slightly waxy consistency (similar to the Tom Ford), and the brush really fluffs up the brow.

HIGHLY recommend e.l.f. Wow Brow as a better-than-dupe for Boy Brow. It’s $6.00, I think, and lasts longer, but very similar in formulation and brush size. It’s my go-to.

  2. Carolyn says:

I’ve been a big fan for a long time of the ItCosmetics brow pencil in Universal Taupe. The color is flattering on a wide range of skin/brow tones and the product goes on well and looks very natural. It’s a mid-range price at about $24ish.

I’ve been using YBF Automatic Eye Brow Pencil in Universal Taupe for years based on your recommendation and I still love it!

  4. Leslie says:

I recently rediscovered Mary Kay and really like their brow pencil.

I bought a tube of Boy Brow and loved it, but my newest tube is depositing WAY too much product. Anyone else have this happen?

  6. Stella Louise says:

I’ve just gone back to TheBalm’s Brow Pow and it makes me wonder why I ever stopped using it.

I have been using the Mac brow pencil (the “propelling pencil one, not the other formulas) for years – occasionally, when I have run out, I have had to substitiute, but nothing has worked as well or lasted during wear anything like as well. It was recommended by a make-up exprt I once consulted, and the other key tip he gave me was that the brow pencil should be a lighter shade than your brows look to blend in better and look more natural.

The most important thing for me is tweezing. I just got the benefit tweezers, they are AMAZING! They have unbelievable grip which makes them SO easy to use. https://www.benefitcosmetics.com/us/en/product/brow-tweezer

  9. Rachel says:

I’m obsessed with the MILK Kush eyebrow gel. It’s $20 and so easy to use. Considering checking out the e.l.f. boy brow dupe though because they look similar!

  10. SC says:

I also like the IT brow pencil in Universal Taupe, but you need a clear gel for the top so to streamline products I’ve switched to Maybelline Brow Drama mascara (not the jumbo pencil) which is a tinted gel. Cheap and does the job.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
