Happy Hour: Pitcher Palomas

Jan 31, 2020

Today is my last day of Dry January.  As for promised benefits, I haven’t noticed any.  I’m not sleeping better.  I haven’t lost any weight.  I don’t have more energy.  My skin’s not looking better.   And I’m a little bit disappointed.

Despite the lack of physical benefits, Dry January forced me to look at why I’m drinking, when I’m drinking.  It made me realize that living in a city without a lot of consistent entertainment option has pushed “getting a drink” to default status on my activity list.  And it made me realize how many times I’m ordering a drink because everyone else is ordering one without really wanting one.  It’s almost reflexive.  So Dry January gave me a lot to think about going forward, but no real physical benefits.

This feature has evolved over the years.  In the beginning, I chose the prettiest cocktails, and quickly learned that the prettiest drinks often had more specialty ingredients than most of us have on hand.  Now, I try to focus on drinks with fewer ingredients, and save the labor intensive cocktails for special occasions.

This Pitcher Paloma from Bravo! Jenny is a reflection of how people actually want to make cocktails at home — as easily as possible.  You make up the grapefruit base before hand, and add the tequila and sparkling soda when you’re ready to drink.  No need to spend time making drinks for guests instead of mingling.  No need to go broke buying specialty bitters.

And, of course, you need a cute pitcher to serve them from.  I like this wood lidded pitcher from Crate and Barrel and this sculptural glass pitcher from West Elm.

I’m holding the Valentine’s Day lingerie post until Monday.  I’m not excited about the items that I found this week, so I want to dig a little deeper and see if  I can find some better pieces this weekend.  But for now, let’s talk about pajamas.

If you’re not a lingerie person, a cute pair of pajamas is a nice way to bring  a little joy back to bed time.  Just putting on something you think is pretty can give you an emotional boost.  This H&M satin camisole set** is just what I had in mind.  It’s adorable, comfortable and just a little bit special.  I also liked this Tommy Hilfiger set and this Flora set with a jasmine-floral print.

(**I’m told this is nearly sold out.  I also found this pretty pink and black set, and this slightly sheer white jacquard set.)

Plus? Try this ruffle accented set from Oh la la.  Petite?  I like this mink-colored set from Missguided.

Looking for something more substantial to sleep in?   These Woodstock satin short pajamas are fun.  As are these Josie floral print pjs.

This looks so refreshing! And that camisole set is adorable, I definitely love a good cute set of lingerie over one you only wear on “special occasions”. Too bad everyone else has the same idea and it’s mostly sold out! This post is feeding my Spring Fever…

I have to say, when I’ve hopped on the wagon in the past, I’ve never noticed any incredible weight-reducing, energy-booting benefits either, and I’m mystified. Pass me a Paloma!

To each their own! I had such impressive results from last year’s dry January that I made it a permanent lifestyle change.

One is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a Little Black Dress

I served Palomas at my birthday party last month and they were a total hit! Made mine with Mexican Squirt per the Joy of Cooking.

  5. Michelle says:

I didn’t notice as many health benefits from dry January this year, but I also have been cutting down drinking to begin with.

Now that it’s February I’m thinking of doing a three drinks max rule. I always come out of January with the lesson that I really don’t miss standard beers or wine, and it’s the nice drinks I miss- so limiting the quantity means I can buy nicer drinks I’ll really enjoy.

Basically attempting to be purposeful with my drinking.
