Monday Outfit: A Layered Casual Look

Jan 27, 2020

With campaigns heating up, I need outfits that are pulled together but casual.  You can’t walk in to a sale barn in Montana in a pencil skirt and heels.  Here’s a stylish, casual outfit that fits the bill.

If you need ideas for casual attire, Kendi Everyday is the blog for you.  In a recent post, she featured this outfit and gave her best tips for layering pieces to create pulled together outfits.  But I decided to recreate this outfit because it could be worn on casual work days, while traveling, or even working from home.

Jeans. In my late-30s, I appreciate high-waist jeans.  They’re more flattering and comfortable.  We talked about my favorite jeans on Friday, so I won’t repeat myself.  But if I’m going be traveling for long hours, these HUE denim leggings are more comfortable at the end of the day than my jeans.

Sweater. This sale-priced Topshop sweater is the inspiration for the post, and it comes in several great colors.  The slightly boxy shape layers well over other pieces, and the thick fabric conceals the buttons underneath.  I also love this mock neck tunic sweater from Madewell in a chic oatmeal color.  Plus-size?  Try this Leith sweater.

Shirt. A tunic-length button-up shirt is a great addition to any wardrobe.  It makes jeans look dressed up, and layers beautifully.  You can wear it over any snug-fitting bottoms.  This Chico’s shirt is stain and wrinkle resistant.  This tab collar blouse and Calvin Klein blouse both caught my eye.  Plus-size ladies should check out this And Comfort blouse.

Accessories.  These pretty J.Crew demi-fine hoops are fantastic.  They’re simple, delicate, and just a little bit different.  Add a pair of chic Ray-Ban aviators for a bit of casual cool.

Bag. I love the look of this Florence bag.  The depressed opening near the handle lets you sling it over your shoulder with ease.  I also like the knotted details and cool shape.  And best of all, it’s under-$75.

Shoes. Who else is ready for spring?  In preparation, I wanted to share these cool Remi leopard mules from Madewell.  They’re a fun shoe.

Still need boots for winter (this or next)?  These Blondo waterproof boots are worth a look.  They come in five colors, have an easy 2.5″ heel, and are under-$100.

Thanks for the boots sale heads up-I have a bunch of cold/wet weather work travel coming up so these will be perfect!

A friend turned me on to the Levi’s pull on jeans https://www.amazon.com/Levis-Womens-Pull-on-Jeans/dp/B07V5DRKNB. They are SO comfortable. I wore them on an intercontinental trip with a six hour layover and was never uncomfortable (because of my clothing). They do run a little large and stretch out a touch, so if you’re in between sizes probably go down.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
