Four Ways: A Pleated Skirt

Jan 9, 2020

A black pleated skirt is an easy classic.  It dresses up, it dresses down.  The trick is to have it hemmed to the perfect length for you, which will probably be just under- or just over-the-knee.  Here’s how to style it.

Skirt. M&S Pleated Midi Skirt

This jersey circle skirt is a great, affordable option.  The comfort waistband is nice for tucking in tops.  And for under-$75, you really can’t find a better skirt.  Plus-size?  This ASOS Curve skirt is a nice alternative.

One. J.Crew Matelasse Jacket // Rebecca Taylor Dotted Top //  Sam Edelman Kitten Heel // Julie Vos Penelope Pearl Stud // Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips

For work, this chic black-and-white look combines pretty and professional elements.  The pretty neckline frill on the blouse peeks out from under the simple textured blazer.  If you prefer a tradition blazer cut, this collarless Banana Republic jacket is for you (also in petite).  Plus-size?  This Talbot’s jacket with black piping is nice.

I adore these lovely pearl earrings from Julie Vos.  The gold accents are so pretty.  For a cheaper pair, these Vince Camuto earrings have a slightly more modern look.

Two. Banana Republic Puff-Sleeve Sweater // Louise et Cie Sevita Boot // Wild Lillies Layered Necklace // Spanx Luxe Tights

For a business casual office, pair the skirt with a simple sweater and a cool boot.  I like the combination of olive and black, it feels relaxed but chic.  Puff sleeves are on-trend right now, and a fun a little detail regardless.

These Louise et Cie boots are a nice complement to the midi skirt.  The skirt should fall just slightly over the top of the boot.  It makes the tall leather boot look a bit more feminine.  If you prefer an ankle boot, try these Sam Edelman boots.

This necklace is so fun.  I love the layered look.  If you need a cheaper option, try this simple black bead necklace (under-$15).

Three. Banana Republic Denim Trucker Jacket // Anine Bing Graphic Tee // Veja Esplar Sneaker // Argento Vivo Hoop Earrings

Something casual for the weekend.  I love the cool graphic on the Anine Bing tee.  Add a simple denim jacket and an understated sneaker to complete the look.

Looking for a cool denim jacket?  This BR is nice if you’re looking for a medium wash.  I prefer a darker wash; it’s a bit more sophisticated (if a denim jacket can be sophisticated).  This Daily Ritual jacket is my favorite.  It has a classic style and a rocking price (<$40!).

These Veja Esplar sneakers are probably the coolest, simplest sneaker on the market.  Choose the simple black, or hunt for a color, like this cobalt or blush pair.

Lastly, I don’t usually wear silver-tone metals, but these earrings are fab.  Love the link detail.

Four. Lorna Asymmetric Sweater // Flora Beaded Hoops // Essie Gel Polish // Eyeko Skinny Mini Eyeliner // Ava & Aiden Bow Sandal

For a dinner date, I like this off-the-shoulder sweater with the flirty skirt.  It shows a little skin, but in an understated way.  For something more affordable, try this Kenzie off-the-shoulder sweater or this DKNY sweater.  Plus-size?  This Aqua sweater is for you.

To complete the look, I pulled in a pretty bow sandal and a pair of beaded hoops.  For the date-night makeup, I chose this skinny, liquid liner (it’s my favorite) and this Essie gel polish in a chic berry color.

How to handle wrinkles from sitting down? This is always what prevents me from going with the pleated skirt option. The back side can get smashed down and wonky with wear through the day. Any tips? Or any fabrics that work better to keep the pleats crisp through wear and washing/cleaning?

haha now I’m doubting the length of my midi pleated skirt! but love these looks – especially 2,3, and 4!

  3. Monica T says:

I can’t do pleated skirts, do you think there is a skirt with a similar vibe that could be worn similarly in place of one? I love the concept of them they just don’t seem to work with my body type.

I completely agree with not being able to wear pleated skirts on my body type. I’m not heavy, but something my hips/mid-section… Love the look, but they make me look enormous. I have trouble with fit and flare dress style too.

    • Mo says:

Same! I was thinking 1, 3 and 4 would work with a just-below-the knee fitted black pencil skirt I already own. For 2 I would swap in an ankle boot as I work in a more conservative market. Would be interested in other suggestions!

Looove these 4 ways!! This is fabulous

I love the four looks, especially the business and business casual looks. Although I might use a non-pleated circle skirt.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
