Gift Guide 2019: Gifts For the Career Woman

Dec 5, 2019

Every November, the giant JCPenney catalog would arrive on our doorstep.  Its pages were filled with all the toys and gifts that a little girl could never want, from robots that serve you breakfast to gorgeous doll houses.  I would mark and dog ear the pages, looking for the perfect gifts.  It didn’t matter that we couldn’t afford them, it was just the ritual of window shopping that I enjoyed.

Now, we have the Internet, and here are the gifts that caught my eye.  Because when you’re buying for a professional woman, the key is to bring a little style and beauty to her every day life.

For Taking Notes in Big Meetings // Leatherology Spiral Snap Planner ($60)

Leatherology makes simple, practical, high-quality leather goods.  This Spiral Snap Planner keeps your notebook and pen at the ready.  They also make lovely planners and padfolios to fill all of your office needs.

For Keeping Warm at Your Desk // Wool Blend Honeycomb Sweater ($40)

This sweater is phenomenal.  It has subtle details and a relaxed, but sophisticated, cut.  It comes in 8 colors and runs to size XX-Large.  It’s the perfect sweater for draping on the back of an office chair.

For Bringing a Little Beauty to Everyday // Catbird Key Pendant ($88)

This delicate key pendant is phenomenal.  You could add it to a bracelet or chain to complete the look.  This Gorjana dog-tag necklace is equally beautiful and minimal.  And I’m still smitten with this incredibly Radial ring from Missoma.

For Protecting Your Eyes from Screen Time // Hungry Bens Blue-Light Glasses ($40)

These screen glasses are my favorites.  They’re not obtrusive and look great on everyone.   I also love the Alchemist Blue Light Glasses from Prive Riveaux.  Because protecting your eyes from an abundance of screen time is important.

For Taking Down Quick Notes // CB2 Jotblock ($30)

CB2 has some truly chic desk accessories right now.  This Jotblock is perfect for replacing your piles of Post-it Notes.  I also like their Wall Task Calendar or Daily Calendar Notepad.  All of the pieces have a glam minimalism to them.

For Keeping Dry Hands at Bay // Aesop Resurrection Hand Balm ($30)

This luxurious hand balm is perfect for keeping in your desk.  It smells amazing, and moisturizes beautifully.  But if, like me, you’re wrists are wrinkling due to all the typing, this Verso Hand Serum will help keep crepey skin at bay.

For Keeping Warm on Long Commutes // Cashmere-lined Tech Gloves ($98)

These leather gloves from J.Crew are stylish and practical.  Lined with cashmere for warmth and comfort, they are also designed to let you use your smartphone while wearing them.  Looking for a wider selection of colors?  Charter Club has you covered.

For Enjoying a Glass of Wine After a Long Day // Coravin Wine System ($299)

How many times have I come home from work and just wanted a single glass of wine, but once you open the bottle, best intentions go out the window.  Coravin lets you enjoy your wine a glass at a time without spoiling the leftovers in the bottle.  You can pick up the original Coravin Model One for just $199.

Great list! Unrelated question: I see that Aphorism is on a “product hiatus.” Any recommendations for substitutes for their Clear Sailing oil? I’m addicted!

  2. Monica says:

With boxed wine (good boxed wine, like botabox, not franzia) you can drink a glass at a time! Since air doesn’t get into the bag the remaining wine doesn’t go bad for months. (And boxed wine is a little cheaper than that wine gizmo :-))

  3. KateL says:

For wine preservation at stocking stuffer price the vacu-vin is excellent.

  4. Kasey says:

I love my Catbird key pendant! For my birthday last year my sister gave me one engraved with the house number of our parents’ house. I love it! I wear it almost every day on a short chain with my favorite gemstone.

  5. Kate says:

I was given those gloves as a gift, and I would not recommend them. The cashmere element is way overblown and they really do not keep your hands warm. Good if you are looking for something with polish, not so much if you are looking for practicality.

    • Belle says:

That’s so good to know. I was looking at them.

    • Cait says:

If you want something similar in a stocking stuffer price range, the leather tech gloves by A New Day at Target are actually really good. I’ve had them for 2 years and they’ve held up well through some cold winters with a good bit of snow, although nothing as intense as the Montana cold.

  6. Alicia says:

Fond memories of the JCPenney catalog!

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
