Monday Outfit: Hello, Holidays

Nov 18, 2019

Even when I dress up for holiday events, I try to keep things easy.  Because it’s better to be a little underdressed in something wonderful than overdressed.  This outfit blends a chunky turtleneck with a satin skirt for a chic party outfit.

BR Cashmere Cable Sweater // Oasis Satin Midi Skirt // Chan Luu Pearl Drops // Charlotte Tilbury Patsy Lipstick // 14th & Union Card Case // INC Gold & Ivory Clutch // Charles David Voltage Sandal

Skirt. The satin skirt was the “cool girl” item of the summer.  If you have one in your closet, the holidays are a good reason to break it out of storage.  This green skirt from Oasis is a wonderful option for the holidays.  I also like this vibrant purple skirt from Iris & Ink.  Plus-size?  This copper-colored skirt is really lovely.

Another option is to wear a satin slip dress under your sweater.   These dresses from Topshop, Dynamite, and ASOS all caught my eye.

Sweater. If you’re in the market for an ivory sweater, Banana Republic is your spot.  This cashmere sweater is lovely, as is this crewneck ribbed sweater.  BR has a wide selection of sweaters for your winter needs.

Want something more festive?  Try this Caslon eyelash sweater that has a fancier texture.  Looking for something under-$50?  This Elodie bobble sweater is nice.

Accessories. Pearl earrings are my current favorite thing, but not the simple studs so many of us own, something a bit different.  These Chan Luu earrings certainly fit the bill.  I also like these Shashi hoop drops and these Club Monaco bar drops (both under-$50).

Bold lipstick is a big part of my holiday attire.  Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips in Patsy (a vibrant red) and Amazing Amal (a deep berry) are two of my favorites.  If you’re looking for a dupe for that Patsy red, try NYX Butter Lipstick in Fire Brick.

When carrying a clutch it’s important to size down your wallet.  This card case is under-$20 and more than up to the challenge of carrying your ID, debit card, and a small bit of cash.  If you’re looking for something a bit flashier, this Gucci Matelasse card case is a lovely piece.

This clutch from INC might be a little fancy for the outfit, but it feels festive.  For something more casual, try this Mark & Graham leather pouch (in several colors, including ivory) or this Wild Lillies ivory clutch.

Lastly, we have these lovely Charles & David sandals.  I own a few pair of Charles & David shoes, and they are quite well built.  These sandals are a nice basic.  Need something in a wider width?  Sam Edelman’s basic sandal comes in wider widths.

Not feeling the sandals in winter?  Try a knee-high tan boot.  It’ll disappear under the hem of the boot and make your legs look longer.

Hi Belle, quick question – do you think short booties would also work with your outfit? Great post – love the rust/copper colored skirt too – thank you!

  2. LP says:

What’s the best way to deal with the inevitable winter static issues?

    • Belle says:

Static Guard, and Bounce dryer sheets. I put a dryer sheet or two in a Ziploc and put it in my purse if I think I may have a problem.

  3. SM says:

How do you deal with the sweater not coming across frumpy? should it be partially tucked into the skirt? French tuck a la Queer Eye?

    • Belle says:

I think if you’re concerned about frump, I would look for a short-ish sweater as opposed to a tunic, and something a bit more fitted. I think a tuck of any kind will look odd on most body types given the different fabric thicknesses.

Oh wow do I love this combo!! Thanks for the inspiration!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
