Saw It On Social: The Dyson Hairdryer

Nov 14, 2019

Several years ago, I purchased the Harry Josh blowdryer during a Dermstore sale and never looked back.  The dryer cut my dry-time in half. It was lighter, quieter, and never scorched my hair.

Harry Josh was my one true love.  I even traveled with my dryer, because once you’ve experienced greatness, a bargain basement hotel dryer will not do.  And if I’m willing to sacrifice carry-on space, you know how deep my affection must be.

For years, ads for the Dyson blowdryer filled my Instagram, Facebook, and blog reader.  It seemed like every influencer was singing its praises.  But no amount of adulation could tempt me away from my beloved Harry.

Then, last week, Harry died.  Murdered by my husband who decided to use my top-of-the-line hair dryer to remove ancient contact paper from the cabinets, because the cheap Conair in the guest bathroom didn’t have that “nozzle thing” to make it easier. And just like that, I was plunged into mourning.

My first inclination was to rush to Dermstore to buy the Ultra Light Harry Josh dryer.  But, since there was a sale running at Sephora, I decided that this might be a good opportunity to try the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer that I had read so much about.   After all, my Dyson V10 Cyclone Stick Vacuum is the greatest thing I’ve ever purchased for myself, so it seemed only fair that I should give the Supersonic a try.

After all, if it didn’t work out, I could always return it and beg my replacement Harry to forgive my brief dalliance.

Reaching for the Dyson, I was impressed by how light it was.  And the design, which looks a bit wonky in photos, seemed to make blowdrying easier somehow.  My wrist, which is usually sore by the end of a blowout, was pain-free.  And maneuvering the dryer to achieve maximum volume seemed almost effortless.

For years, it took 7-minutes to blow-dry my hair.  I could set my watch by it.  Then, I got sew-in hair extensions for my wedding.  28-minutes, woof.  So when I finished my blow-dry in just 16-minutes, I was seriously impressed.

And as I stood there, looking in the mirror, I couldn’t deny that my hair seemed to have more volume.   That the right side–which is usually just a bit more deflated than the left due to being right handed–seemed just as lively as its twin.  Even the curl at the ends seemed bouncier, more alive.

My only reaction was, “Whoa.”

It’s been quite some time since an influencer-endorsed product delivered on its many promises.  Usually, I try the new hot thing and think, “meh” or “fine.”  But not the Dyson.

In just one blow-dry, I was a total convert.  And given the levels of adoration that I felt for my Harry Josh, that’s saying something.

I even kept the Dyson box because I was sure it was headed back to the store.  There was no way it could live up to the hype, and at $399, I wasn’t going to accept anything less.  Now, I’m wondering if Kyle will mind hanging it above our bed like a religious relic in hopes that it might imbue me with its epicness.

Bottom Line: The Dyson Supersonic is a marvel.  It is the second Dyson product that has changed my life.  So I don’t know what kind of witchcraft James Dyson is doing, but I am here for it.

I would buy this dryer again in a heartbeat.  I would buy it at full price.  I would give it as a gift to someone I really loved (like a lot).  And I would definitely recommend that you spend your money on it.  It’s not just hype.  It’s actually that good.

Like all Saw It On Social posts, I snapped up this Dyson blow dryer with my own money.  No sponsorships were solicited or accepted.  And if I’m willing to plonk down this kind of money on a hair dryer without even a tinge of regret, it must be amazing.  In fact, if James Dyson showed up at my house right now, and told me that I needed to give him more money in order to keep this dryer, my only response would be, “Who do I make my check out to?”

I agree! I have had mine for 3 years. Have given a couple as gifts. Best blow dryer ever and that is coming from a professional.

  2. Crystal says:

I’m glad you liked it! I tried out my colleague’s Dyson and didn’t think it was sufficiently improved (certainly not hundreds of dollars improved) over my T3, but I’m glad it made a big difference for you!

    • Kelly says:

1 have a T3 too! My first one died catastrophically after 8 months so hoping that was a fluke.

      • Crystal says:

I’m on my second T3 in… maybe 8 years? Admittedly, I only dry my hair about once or twice a week, but I do have a lot of hair. Hopefully yours breaking so quickly was a fluke. (Was it still under warranty?)
I remember that when my first one died mid-dry, I finished with a cheap Con-Air and OMG the difference. I went straight to the store to get a new T3!

        • Kelly says:

Mine was from Costco, so they took it back and I promptly bought another. I just turned it on one day and it made the WORST sound, like something was breaking into a million pieces inside. I’m guessing the fan since after it didn’t really push air out after that.

  3. Amy says:

I love that you do this style of review Belle and that we feel you are giving an honest and unbiased opinion.
    Thank you.

  4. RR says:

My husband bought mine as a gift and I absolutely LOVE. In fact, I’ve mulled over whether to buy one for my lake house, although it seems beyond excessive at $400. But it is really really really good.

  5. C says:

Thanks for the review! Am really curious about the experience of other readers- I have curly hair, and try to do the curly girl method- does this work well for curly hair, with a diffuser attachment?

    • Amy says:

Yes, the diffuser works amazingly well!
I can understand why pros don’t love it ($$$), but for me the main selling points for home use are the light weight, the heat control, and how easy it is to angle the head of the attachments to get the exact angle you need to do the back/sides of your hair. How nobody else has run with the ‘magnetic nozzle’ thing is insane to me, it is THAT big of a game changer for a home blow-out.

      • Crystal says:

I agree that Dyson’s magnets are an improvement! My best guess as to why other companies haven’t adopted the same technology, based on professional experience and a few minutes of searching online, would be (1) the business consideration of companies not wanting to expend the costs to redesign, re-source, and change the manufacturing of their existing products, and (2) Dyson holds some intellectual property on magnetized nozzle attachments and has the deep pockets to potentially defend them.

  6. MegaN says:

I’m so glad you reviewed this! I’ve been saving Ulta rewards points and have enough to cover half. I’m sold!

    • Kelly says:

I did this last year when Ulta extended their 20%-off promos to include Dyson. If I remember correctly, it was shortly before Christmas, so you might wait and see if they do something similar this year.

  7. Rachel says:

The money spent on my Dyson has been the best money spent on a beauty purchase, ever. The dryer has radically changed my routine. I have thick, coarse, curly hair, and with the Dyson I reduced my dry time from 45 minutes to 15. Amazing.

  8. Ta says:

Speaking of your wedding…are you planning on sharing any pictures with us?

  9. Julia says:

I totally agree. I LOVED LOVED LOVED my Harry Josh, and still have it for guests or in case I ever need a back up, but the Dyson is my go to dryer now. There are definitely trade offs, but overall I think the Dyson is lighter, quieter, and watches the temp so that my hair won’t scorch (which I was doing with the Harry Josh’s hottest setting and condenser nozzle before I realized I needed to back off the heat). It was a splurge at the time, but I would buy another in a heartbeat.

  10. Kate says:

So appreciate the honest review of the Dyson – been considering it for years. Would love to see a post about your experience with extensions for a wedding! I tried sew in extensions once and felt they were pretty heavy/potentially damaging my hair + was always worried they could be visible if the wind blew. Thinking about giving them a go for wedding next year.

    • Belle says:

I am working on a post, but I don’t have any photos, which seems like a mistake on my part. But I had pretty good luck. Now that they’ve been removed, I do feel like I may have lost some hair in the back. Probably from the increase in brushing and tangling. But overall a good experience, that I probably wouldn’t repeat every day.

  11. Sarah says:

Would you say the Dyson is worth is for people that don’t have a ton of hair? I liked that you saw more volume, but it seems like drying time is the major draw. Do you feel like it looked healthier as well? I’m not so worried about dry time as I am health, volume, non-frizz, shine, etc..

    • Belle says:

I think the cuticle is smoother and a bit shinier. I don’t have a ton of hair normally, and I had my extensions taken out Wednesday, and it still gave me more volume.

  12. Emily says:

I struggle when I read reviews that say that their hair has more volume after blow drying because I never know what that means exactly… My hair usually results in poofy hair from root-to-end that could technically be considered “volume” but I would never leave the house without using a straightener over it first to reduce the poof. I’m always looking for something that results in smooth, yet still voluminous hair. Would you say this is more a smooth result with volume at the crown or a root-to-end poofy volume like what I always end up with?

    • Belle says:

I style it “poofy” intentionally, so I’m probably not the right audience for this question. But maybe someone who likes sleeker hair can weigh in.

  13. Jennifer says:

    Love this review. Thank you!

I actually was considering it. Then my sister wanted some type of L’Ange dryer and I decided to buy it for her as a gift. As it turns out, she bought it for herself at the same time. I tried to return it but they have. the.worst.service.ever. So now I am stuck with this dryer that feels too expensive to disregard and buy the Dyson, but I hate it. And I hate the company (L’Ange)

    • Belle says:

Have you considered contacting your credit card company for a chargeback? I just had to do this, and it wasn’t simple, but it was ultimately resolved in my favor.

  14. Kristen says:

I have to admit, if my husband murdered my hair dryer, I would first have to murder him (haha) but yes I love love my dyson hair dryer. My recommendation for those who want to buy it but have a hard time with the price point is to buy it on a day that Ulta does a 4x or 5x point days so you can get $100 in points for the next time you shop at Ulta.

    • Belle says:

I heard it hit the floor from the other side of the house, and it was like it was calling out for me. I’ve had that dryer longer than I’ve known Kyle.

  15. Samantha Flick says:

How does the Dyson compare from a volume perspective? That’s the biggest issue I have with my current hair dryer.

  16. Carrie says:

Thank you for sharing your review of the hair dryer!
Has anyone tried the Airwrap? Would love to hear thoughts on that product!

  17. Caitlin says:

I got one as a 30th birthday gift and it’s ruined all other hair dryers for me. The first time I used it I heard angels sing. Before the Dyson, if I wanted to fully dry and style my hair, I was looking at 2-3 hours of work. I have incredibly thick hair; if I put it up when it’s wet it can stay wet for days. With the Dyson, I can blow dry my whole head in about 20 minutes, which means it has given me literally hours of my life back to do other things. It feels gentler on my hair compared to other driers, but I’d re-purchase based on time saving alone.

  18. Jamie Patton says:

Can you please review the dyson airwrap?

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
