Monday Outfit: A Casual Fall Look

Sep 30, 2019

How was your weekend?  Mine was interesting.  I spent some of it shoveling snow, in September.   So while I know it’s still in the 80s in some parts of the country, I’m more than ready to talk about fall attire.

Several of you have asked for more casual suggestions, so today’s Monday outfit is the epitome of business casual.  From Thrifty Pineapple, this outfit mixes simple pieces for an easy look.

Blazer.  Ignore the very expensive Veronica Beard check blazer in the collage.   If you want to recreate the look, you want this Hutton herringbone blazer from Ann Taylor (also in petite).  Not loving the navy?  Try this pink herringbone blazer from Express that comes in under-$100.  Plus-size?  Try this LOFT blazer in a soft grey herringbone.

Top.  This Banana Republic blouse has a mockneck line for fall in a lighter poplin fabric.  Need more of a v-neck, this Nanette Lepore top is a nice mix of a mock neck and v-neck.  Plus-size ladies should check out this top from Bloomingdale’s.

Jeans. These Blair skinny jeans from 7 for All Mankind have a great classic fit.  If you’re looking for something under-$100, these Jag Jeans have a great wash and come in misses or petite.  Looking for something with a wider leg opening?  7 for All Mankind Dojo jeans are a longtime favorite.

Shoes. How chic are these Nine West mules?  I love the sleek Mary Jane style.  And they’re on sale at Nordstrom Rack.

Looking for something more like the inspiration photo?  These Madewell Gemma flats have a similar look.  Prefer a simple flat loafer?  These Franco Sarto loafers are worth a look; they also come in wider widths.

Bag. I know the tote in the photo is a canvas, monogrammed weekend bag.  But I prefer something with more structure and sleekness to it.

The orange lining in this Lauren Ralph Lauren Marcy Tote is fabulous.  If you’d like something that bridges the gap between a work satchel and canvas tote, Everlane’s Day Market bag is a good option.  It’s well-made, a good size, and can take a bit of a beating from heavy use.

Earrings. The unexpected shape of these Melissa Joy Manning hoops is an update on a classic.  For a more affordable option, these Kenneth Jay Lane hoops run under-$25.

Dangit!! Now I just want that Veronica Beard Blazer! The details on it are so perfect. If it had a back vent, I would be powerless to resist.

I have to say that I bought a very expensive Veronica Beard jacket ($500? $600?) after wanting it for six months. I justified it by saying I would have it forever.

Two years later, it has held up terribly. I think I dry cleaned it twice? And stopped because it was making the fabric look terrible. Very disappointed in what was my most expensive clothing purchase ever (at that time) (have since bought an expensive trench coat haha).

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
