Monday Outfit: A Leather Pencil Skirt

Sep 23, 2019

Today’s outfit is made for creative offices that are also professional — pr companies, marketing firms, design agencies, etc..  The kind of places where you can push the boundaries a bit.  So if you’re looking for an outfit that combines classic pieces with a little something extra, scroll on.

Today’s outfit comes from Jorden Lam (@jordenlam_).  It’s an edgier take on basic pieces that allows you to blend the professional with a bit of rocker chic.  Here’s how I would recreate it.

Top. The cowl neck or drape blouse is one of my favorites.  This Charlie May Cowl Neck Top has a wonderful modern shape and could be worn with casual or professional pieces.  I would also wear it with a pair of wide leg pants or high waist jeans.

If you’re looking for something more affordable, this DKNY blouse and this Elie Tahari blouse with a high neck top.  Plus-size?  This Michael Kors top is worth a look.

Skirt. A leather pencil skirt is a good way to upgrade a simple style.  This Saks Fifth Ave. pencil skirt is a well-made, sophisticated option.  For something less expensive, this 1.State leather skirt is a nice option.  Plus-size ladies should check out this Eloquii pencil skirt.

Not a fan of leather?  This WHBM leopard-jacquard pencil skirt is nice, as is this Anne Klein boucle tweed skirt.

Coat. An olive coat is an unexpected neutral for fall.  I chose this Rag & Bone coat for its simple styling and clean lines.  This & Other Stories cape coat is a more dramatic option.  If you’d prefer a deeper green option, this Marks & Spencer coat has a gorgeous holly color.

Accessories.  These Amazon sunglasses were on the blog last week, and several of you messaged me that they more than lived up to expectations.  So here they are again.

Want to belt an overcoat?  The key is to buy a belt that’s too big for you.  I prefer men’s belts because they’re usually built a bit stronger than women’s belts.  So the belt in the collage is a Madewell men’s belt.

Kate Spade’s Margaux Satchel is one of the best looking bags to hit the market recently.  I love the clean lines and the Celine-inspired handles.  The large, divided compartments are also a nice choice for working women.  Looking for a less expensive alternative?  Just under-$50, this Urban Expressions bag has many of the same elements.

Jorden chose a neutral, flesh-toned heel for her outfit.  For me, that feels a bit more appropriate for summer than fall.  So I grabbed a sturdy, block heel from Catherine Malandrino.  The best part?  They come in seven colors and cost under-$40.

Wide feet?  These Naturalizer pumps are a great choice.  Prefer flats?  These Donna Karan mules and these dip-vamp Marc Fisher flats are both chic options.

The price of that Charlie May cowl neck top hurts my feelings, but it is gorgeous.

Loft has a faux leather pencil skirt now as well. Great budget option! Love the look!

I feel so put together just looking at this outfit. 😉

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
