Like many women, I’m very self-conscious about wearing shorts. Finding a flattering pair is a challenge. But these North Face shorts are my go to gym and hiking short for comfort and fit.
North Face’s Aphrodite short are the only ones I buy. They’re made for hiking, but they also make a nice gym short. I love the medium-length inseam, the wide drawstring waistband, and the flexible fabric.
If you’re looking for a straight gym short, I like Athleta’s Record Breaker running shorts. Also, if someone has a recommendation for gym shorts for plus-size readers, please leave it in the comments.

Target’s A New Day brand French Terry shorts go up to an XXL and I’m a curvy (size 18/20) girl who finds them super comfy and flattering!

I’ve got to share my recent shorts purchases that have turned out to be two of my favorite items I’ve bought this year. Neither of these are necessarily hardcore workout shorts, but they’re incredibly comfortable, flattering, and versatile:

Highly recommend both!
Target’s 7″ Training Shorts (C9 Champion brand) are fabulous. I bought them to wear under dresses and they are fabulous and don’t roll down and everything rolls down on me. I haven’t worn them to workout but I’m sure they would be great.
I bought these when you posted them last year and LOVE them–perfect to take on an active vacation too!
Oiselle’s long roga shorts (with a fab 6″ inseam) are my ride-or-die, bury-me-in-them-perfect short. Most of their shorts come in a long option, and it’s a women-owned, women-focused company.
The Athleta shorts you mentioned are actually girls shorts, not women. Just FYI!
I love all the bottoms from SkirtSports – don’t worry, the “skirt” mostly means “skort”, and they have shorts and leggings too. Lots of actually useful pockets and great prints. They have a range of sizes including plus and I’ve heard from plus folks that they love them too.
Old Navy workout shorts are the only ones I wear for weightlifting, yoga and running- they barely roll on thick thighs and have pockets that are fit my phone and keys when walking. I just don’t feel comfortable with my phone in there while running.
