I didn’t eat breakfast for like 18 years.  Sure, “it’s the most important meal of the day,” but I just don’t make the time.  And after so much time not eating breakfast, I’m rarely hungry before lunch.

So do you eat breakfast?  If so, do you have a standard meal?  And if not, do you think you ever will?

  1. Jessica says:

I love breakfast but not enough to wake up earlier for it. I eat breakfast everyday but only because I work in an office environment that allows me to make and eat breakfast at work. If I had to make it and eat at home, I’d definitely skip it or opt for a protein shake.

  2. Anna says:

I love breakfast and often wake up starving. If you’re watching your weight, there really is no need to eat breakfast if you aren’t hungry and don’t feel sluggish or anything.

    • Megan says:

Actually, just the opposite is true. Eating breakfast is one of the best things you can do if you’re watching your weight. It kicks your metabolism into gear and generally leads to better eating and greater satisfaction with what you do eat for the rest of the day.

      • Anna says:

It kick starts your metabolism, because your body is now using energy to process the food you just consumed (thermic effect of feeding). You’d still be up in calories on balance. The study the whole “breakfast keeps you from eating later” idea was founded on has been debunked many times. If you find that putting off breakfast makes you even more hungry later in the day, then of course, eat. But if you’re the kind of person that doesn’t get hungry until later, then you’re just consuming extra calories for no reason.

  3. Monica T says:

I don’t eat breakfast because I’m usually not hungry until around 10 or 11 am. So while I do have a first meal of the day it’s not first thing when I wake up. I wake up and have coffee with half & half and then eat homemade Starbucks sous vide egg bite copycats that I meal prep on Sundays around an hour or so before I workout on my lunch hour. Then I usually eat my lunch leisurely in the early afternoon while working at my desk. I like a lightish dinner around 7, so this works for me.

  4. C says:

I don’t eat breakfast, but sometimes I’ll have a snack around 10 or 11am if I get hungry. I think it depends on how much I ate the night before. I keep dried fruit and nuts in my desk for this purpose because I like them enough to actually eat them, but don’t crave them so much that I mindlessly snack if I’m not really hungry.

  5. Christine says:

I eat breakfast daily, I get light-headed when I don’t. I just eat the same oatmeal every day since I can make and eat it pretty quickly while getting ready for work.

  6. Mercedes says:

I never have time to eat breakfast (#momlife) but I make a protein shake every morning and drink it during my commute. I’ve been using the Isagenix brand meal replacement shakes for years and swear by them. Then about 2-3 hours later at work I’ll have an Oikos triple zero yogurt with a 1/2 cup of Kashi Go Lean cereal. That’s my morning!

  7. RAR says:

I recently stopped eating breakfast during the week and have noticed zero difference in my mood, hunger, etc. (in fact I may be less hungry than I was before). The only difference is that I now eat lunch around 12pm where I used to eat around 1pm or later. I spent a lot of time trying to find healthy, good breakfast options that I did not get sick of that this has been a bit of a mental relief. I still occasionally splurge (this morning REQUIRED McDonald’s) and I do eat breakfast on the weekends, when my mornings are slower.

  8. Nicole says:

For years I forced myself to eat breakfast because like you said “most important meal of the day!” I’ve recently started intermittent fasting and don’t break my fast until 10am.

I love it! I can drink my coffee with a splash of Nutpods from 6-10am then break my fast at 10am and eat until 6pm.

I really enjoy not stressing about what to eat so early in the morning. I get to leisurely drink my coffee and eat at 10am when my stomach starts grumbling.

  9. Jules says:

I used to be staunchly against breakfast. I took pride in not having eaten breakfast for 15+ years. I was extrememly against breakfast, and was never hungry anyway.

However about 2 months ago, I changed my eating habits, and am following a macro-based nutrition plan. It was not comfortable to eat all the macros I needed without having an extra meal to put those calories in. So now I eat a bowl of All Bran cereal and a HUGE egg white omelet with sriracha every morning. Surprisingly, I now LOVE eating breakfast 🙂

Not a sweets person though. Gotta prioritize protein for dem gainz! LOL

  10. kate says:

I am so not a breakfast eater for breakfast. Whenever I do give it a go I feel weighted down and am usually starving by 10:30 am. In the am hydration of some sort works better for me. I do however, love breakfast for dinner – especially in winter.

  11. Ashley says:

Toasted english muffin with peanut butter which I wrap up and eat at my desk each morning. Weekends are the same or we might do a big brunch-style breakfast. Due to my lack of a gallbladder, skipping meals does terrible things to my insides when I do eventually eat, not to mention the terrible reflux I get on an empty stomach. All you non-breakfast-eaters amaze me.

  12. Amy says:

No breakfast. I assume people who “wake up starving” are morning people. I have iced coffee with milk within an hour of waking up. During the workweek when I’m up by 8:30 I sometimes eat a snack around 11:00. On weekends I sleep until noon-ish, have my coffee within an hour, and eat my first meal mid-afternoon (or sometimes not until 5 pm, so my “breakfast” is really “early bird dinner”).

  13. Espie says:

I eat breakfast every day. I can’t get through the morning without coffee and and I can’t have coffee on an empty stomach. Typical breakfast is 1 hard boiled egg and half a piece of whole wheat toast. I also tend to be up early (5:30) and don’t get around to lunch until about 1PM. Works for me. Because I can make 7 hard boiled eggs quickly on the weekend; it’s also not a lot of meal prep time.

  14. Lily says:

LOVE breakfast, and I tend to feel sick and sluggish if I don’t eat it.
Go-to meals are toast topped with either almond butter/sliced banana and cinnamon or avocado/fried eggs and chili lime seasoning. If I’m craving salty, then I’ll make an omelet with veggie sausage and spinach. If I want sweet, then it’s chocolate oatmeal or a smoothie.
The ritual of sitting down to a nice meal, a cup of hot coffee, and something positive to read is such a nice way to start the day, although it does take an extra 15-20 minutes.

  15. Andrea says:

Team No Breakfast! For years (years!) I tormented myself trying to get up earlier so I could force down “the most important meal of the day” and I hated every second. I’m much happier waiting until a little later (10:30ish) for a small snack. I’m a low carb lover so I like a slice of ultra thin cheese wrapped around some deli roasted chicken with a baby carrot inside for some texture.

I’ve recently started to mix a scoop of Vital Proteins collagen peptides into my morning coffee with half and half and that easily carries me through to snack time, even if I wake up hungrier than usual! It’s a new routine so no word yet on any joint/skin benefits from the collagen, but nutritionally it’s a big winner for me!

  16. Debbie s says:

As a lifetime WW member who lost nearly 40 pounds at age 50, I find that eating breakfast is essential. I make a tofu scramble with vegetables, tahini, Tamara and Dijon and enjoy it with half of an English muffin at 7:00. Later in the morning, while at work, I eat a banana, berries and nonfat Greek yogurt. I’m happy with the simplicity and repetition which may drive others a little crazy.

  17. SC says:

I eat breakfast because my stomach needs a little something before the coffee hits it. I eat a grapefruit when they’re in season and the other 9 months of the year I have a little bowl of cereal (or a yogurt if I’m running late). I usually have eggs, oatmeal, or French toast on weekends.

  18. Jill says:

Not a breakfast eater. Didn’t even really care about it as a kid. Have coffee with milk, cold brew lately. I like a Luna bar (blueberry is surprisingly delicious) when the caffeine wears off mid-morning. Unfortunately, I’m now getting headaches after eating lunch. I think the spike in blood sugar does it. I might have to force feed something earlier to avoid that, don’t want to. Love a hot breakfast for dinner. 🙂

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
