Product Review: Two Drybar Favorites

May 2, 2019

Several years ago, before she was uber-famous, I got to meet Drybar founder Alli Webb at an event.  She was kind enough to style my hair for me, and we had a long chat about her vision for her business.  She was adamant that the future of Drybar was not just blowouts, but the product line.  And in the years since, a few of her products have become my very favorites.

Her Detox Dry Shampoo was my A-Number-1 pick for years.  My one complaint, however, was the residue.  I could brush it in, but the spray would build up on my brush, on my countertops, and it was a little bit of a pain.  So I switched to the whipped Detox foam, which works great, but I missed the ease of a spray.

When I saw they were releasing an invisible Detox formula, I jumped on it.

Drybar Detox Clear ($23) is everything you love about Detox without the mess.  It cleans well.  The freshness lasts through an entire workday.  Volume and texture are revived.  But there’s no residue.

The first time I used it, all I could think was, “Game changer.”  It brushes in beautifully.  No residue on my countertops.  And I never worry that I missed a spot.

I’ve had a lot of requests for this review.  So let’s talk about Drybar’s Charcoal On the Rocks Scalp Scrub.

I first bought this product because I thought it looked interesting.  A scrub, for your hair.  Why not?

The product is designed for people with an oily scalp.  But I find it helpful because I sometimes dry shampoo 2-3 days in a row when I’m working, and the itching, oh the itching.

When the dry shampoo and product build up get to be too much, I give my scalp a little scrub and my hair is revived.  My scalp feels revived.  And the itching subsides.  For me, the effect last a couple of weeks, or four dry shampoos, depending on my schedule.

But two quick product notes.  First, I hate the smell.  I loathe the fragrance of sandalwood, and this has that as one of its notes.  I suck it up because the product is great, but you may not want to.  Product fragrance is a tough thing for a lot of people, and my one universal complaint about Drybar is all the smells.  This is not a complaint others seem to share since they actually make candles scented like some of their products.

Second, friends with dandruff have given me mixed reviews.  Two liked it, two felt it gave them more dandruff.  Your mileage may vary.  If you want to try it, I suggest buying it from Sephora or Nordstrom given their liberal return policies.  One of the friends who tried it and didn’t like it had better results with the dpHue Apple Cider Scrub.

Regardless, the fresh, clean feeling that I get after a scrub is very satisfying.  I just wish the scents weren’t as strong.

Second this – I had a nice sample from Sephora of the Drybar Dry Shampoo in my locker for after the gym, I’d never used it until I moved my favorite Bumble & Bumble dry shampoo to a travel case and forgot to bring it back. OMG – the scent on this stuff, I immediately gave it to my colleague who doesn’t mind scent and ordered another bottle of the Bumble & Bumble.

I couldn’t agree more! I like the products but HATE the scent – I find it cloying and old lady-ish. Just saw they sell a candle w/ ‘the scent of drybar’ on their website – HARD PASS.

  2. Kate says:

I love the Not Your Mother’s scalp scrub! I have an oily scalp and use it once a week to clear everything up. It has made a huge change in my hair and reduced the scalp pimples I used to encounter often.

  3. Christine says:

I think your post cut off before the end!

  4. Susan says:

Agreed on the scent issues. While I Love the idea, concept and opportunity to go to Drybar, the products leave me less than thrilled and that makes me so sad. Kind of like the bath and body works of hair care…trendy, smells lovely but leaves a gross residue all the way around. And for the price…I’d like better quality. But the buttercup blow dryer is WORTH EVERY PENNY I use sat. It is a true gamechanger.

    • Amy says:

I absolutely agree with you. I can’t handle the scents of their products but the Drybar tools are worth every penny. I started with the 3 Day Bender (curling iron) and loved it so much I now have the flat iron and blow dryer. I’m not good at styling my hair but these tools make me feel almost like a Pro.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
