Five Dresses/Five Days: A Summer Caftan

Apr 29, 2019

I love dresses.  I would wear dresses every day weather permitting.  So this week, let’s celebrate dresses with a few pieces that are perfect for work and play.

Starting with a breezy summer caftan that you will want to have in time for this weekend.  (Unless you’re in Montana, and it could very likely snow again. ????‍♀️)

It’s adorable, with whimsical details, but the black and white color pattern reads like a classic.  This embroidered caftan from & Other Stories ($99) gives me all the Joan Didion in Slouching Towards Bethlehem feels.

I would wear it with a minimal, strappy black sandal and a raffia tote (I love this slightly splurgy one, but the coral woven into this $48 bag gives it a more fun look.)

Looking for a caftan on the breezier side of things — not quite as much structure?  This Universal Standard dress from Nordstrom has a relaxed feel and comes in plus-sizes. (Please don’t wear it with ankle boots like the model.)

I also like this ombre-printed caftan for those who like their weekend attire with a side of structured pool cover-up.  It’s pretty and feminine and will have everyone asking where you got it.

Just a note about Universal Standard, which I’ve seen on this blog a few times – I went to their showroom in Soho this weekend, and I had such a great experience. I didn’t have an appointment, but it didn’t matter – they still pulled a bunch of stuff for me to try, and I had great, personalized service. It was similar to an appointment at MM LaFleur, only more relaxed. They also gave us champagne and whiskey (good for my poor husband, who sat there for an hour while I tried everything on). I highly recommend it if you’re in NY and are interested in trying their stuff – I had ordered online previously and returned everything because the sizing was off.

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
