Death is nothing, but to live defeated and inglorious is to die daily. — Napoleon Bonaparte

Perfected. How to keep perfectionism from getting in the way of your goals.

Bowed. This Theory tie-neck blouse (short sleeve and long) is perfect for work, and under-$100.

Shared. Your period tracker may be sharing your most private information with Facebook.

Suited. I will not buy the gorgeous dusty rose suit.  I will not buy the suit.  I will not…

Hustled. Millions of women dream of making a living wage as creatives (blogger, vlogger, social media, etc.), but the money doesn’t usually follow.  Is it because these industries are mostly populated by women?

Roared. These fantastic leopard loafers come in regular and wide widths.

Inquired. Three questions for soliciting and receiving effective feedback.

Applied. Need new makeup brushes?  This Sigma face brush set and basic face kit are the best.

Cleansed. The French way to wash your hair. (Surprisingly, this is how I wash my hair.)

Burned. This salted-grapefruit candle is my new favorite (and I never burn candles).

Hitha Palepu and I are committed to creating positive spaces on the Internet for women.  I have the Thirtyish Community Group, and she has #5SmartReads, a daily roundup of five interesting stories from around the web.  I read them every day.  You can follow her on Instagram to see them in her stories or you can subscribe to her #5SmartReads newsletter to receive them in your email at the end of the week.

I’m not sure bloggers/vloggers, etc are not paid because of their gender… I think it’s more because there are SO MANY people out there uploading all their content *for free* so why would a company pay for it when they can easily and quickly find someone else to do it for free?

I’m certain there are some (many) cases of sexism, like the author’s anecdote at the end. But I’m torn on whether the money thing is outrage worthy. Maybe I’m missing something?

My hairdresser always smears conditioner right on my scalp, right up to my hairline. I cringe every time. I only put it on my ends when I shampoo myself.

  3. Jules says:

That social media monetization article was interesting, but the interview didn’t get too deep into the ‘whys’.
As with any industry, there’s people at the top making VERY large sums of money, and people at the bottom who don’t.

But when you look at the successful people, they aren’t making all their money from their regular content – they sell services, products, events, affiliate, etc. I think sponsored posts fall somewhere in between content and service. Like, for example, the “fitfluencers” probably make most of their money from selling training programs, not views off YouTube which will only pay pennies.

I’m sure there is sexism involved. One influencer shared some of the comments she receives on her videos (that she blocks) and they were absolutely appalling, and I’m sure many women don’t post because of things like that. However, I personally think the bigger barrier to monetization is a) the sheer quantity of competition, and b) lack of long-term business/marketing skills to turn internet fame into financial stability. There’s only so many travel bloggers I want to follow, you know?

I signed up for 5 Smart Reads! I’m also subscribed to The Sunday Long Read: also a weekly newsletter full of interesting articles, with an eye towards longform journalism. It’s great with a cup of coffee on Sunday mornings.

So what if I don’t have $66 (let alone $150!) to splurge on a boar bristle brush? Suggestions on a cheaper version?

  6. CeeCee says:

Hi Abra, I’ve been waiting for your Saw It On Social Modern Fertility post- did I miss it or are you still waiting on results? I’m seriously considering this one and really can’t wait to read your take! Thanks!!

I’m supposed to get them today. It’s taken many weeks longer than anticipated. Which will all be written up in the review.

  7. Nancy says:

I tried to sign up for the 5SmartReadsNewsletter but didn’t see when I hit the link a place to put in my email…when I clicked on the name above it said all signed up but I did not submit any of my information…am I missing something here…does it do it automatically? Thanks

    • Hitha says:

      Hi Nancy!

If you entered your e-mail, you’re all signed up! I keep the emails at a minimum to not flood your inbox. If you don’t receive tomorrow’s e-mail, please let me know (hitha@hithaonthego.com)

  8. Maria says:

Thank you for that link about washing hair the French way! Tried it over the last two days and the results are immediately obvious!

  9. PAULA says:

Buyer beware. Because of your recommendation on how the French wash their hair, I ordered products from Christophe Robin February 28th. After many attempts at a tracking number, I have been put on hold for long periods of time and my number has been blocked. I am suspicious. My credit card company will be receiving the next call.
