The Edit: Affordable Bodysuits for Work or Weekend

Feb 21, 2019

Bodysuits are making a comeback, and I am so pleased.  As a long-torsoed person, I can never keep a shirt tucked in and looking smooth.  But with a bodysuit, this problem is eliminated.  Here are a few affordable options that caught my eye.

Row A Floral Bodysuit ($45)

Missguided Polka Dot Top ($37)

Paris Wrap Bodysuit ($69)

Leith Surplice Bodysuit ($59)

J.Crew Stretch Perfect Bodysuit ($78, also in plus)

I love that a lot of these bodysuits are wrap tops. I can never quite figure out how to get these to look flattering with skirts on me (stop too low but look weird tucked in), and this might do the trick.

  2. EET says:

Do you get VPL with the JCREW one, and if so, do you stick to skirts, or can you still wear trousers/jeans?

    • Belle says:

I get a little when I wear my thinner pencil skirts. Not with jeans or with thicker pants. I just wear those Jockey slimmers when I wear it with a pencil.

  3. sara says:

I seriously don’t know what I’m going to do when bodysuits go out of style. They just look fantastic with high-waisted pants.
Many of my favorite bodysuits have come from Anthropologie (if you’re looking for another source!) and many are in petite.

I’ve had my eye on the J.Crew one for over a year. Abra, can you speak to how easily it wrinkles or if the white is on the transparent side?

    • Belle says:

The white has more opacity than most cotton shirts on the market right now. Not as opaque as I would like, but pretty good. I wash it and then have to press out some wrinkles, but it doesn’t wrinkle much while wearing it, except in the elbow crease.

  4. Jessica says:

Do you have to have a flat tummy to wear with a bodysuit or are some designed to be a little forgiving? My guess is that you need to be pretty flat in the belly area but wanted to ask before I purchased since I do love the look and functionality.

    • Belle says:

Surprisingly, the opposite is actually true because they have a slimming effect. The trick is you must try them on. In my case, I’ve grown thicker in my midsection recently, so I have to size up a bit to get the fit I need.

  5. Carrie Smith says:

I like the idea and the look of these but I cannot handle how they ride up for me… a wedgie all day. Maybe it’s just me since everyone else seems to like them, but I found the JCrew one so uncomfortable.

    • Belle says:

A friend had the same problem. Her tailor sewed hers to a pair of boyshorts. She bought the shorts, brought them to the tailor, and from what I understand, the tailor cut the attached thong leaving an inch of the thong material, and then sewed that to the boy shorts.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
