“Nothing is as obnoxious as other people’s luck.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald

Benevolent. How to ask a friend for a favor without seeming insincere.

Trended. This double-breasted Lioness blazer is cool but approachable, and trend-priced at $88.

Searching. The Muse’s 10-step checklist to start your job search.

Matched. Get 7 knockoff-Beauty Blender’s for the price of 1/2 a real one.

Altered. When is it okay to let a relationship change you?

Fancy. Need work dresses? This scalloped-neck Maggy London and this bold, cobalt Donna Karan are mid-price and incredible.

Independent. The psychological trap of doing freelance work.

Donned. Finally bought the most famous coat on Amazon, it’s cool and warm.

Flown. The big, controversial business of women’s club The Wing.

Shorn. De-pill your sweaters with this $12 sweater shaver.

Rejuvenated. What is a “Mommy Makeover,” and why are they controversial?

I’m currently obsessed with baking sweet breads.  They’re just so warm and inviting on a cold winter day.  This Puerto Rican sweetbread requires only a handful of ingredients, and would be so perfect for a Galentine’s Day brunch.

Looking for something even more delectable?  Six words: Burnt Butter Salted Maple Sticky Buns.

That coat! It’s so famous but I didn’t trust many of the reviews. You know cold, wet DC weather — would it be good for that?

    • Belle says:

I haven’t gotten it wet, so I would be the wrong person to ask. Snow in MT is super dry. But it is warm.

      • B says:

How do you find the construction? Is it Minnesota/Montana -10 air temp warm, and is it washable? I WFH often and dash out to the gym for spin over lunch many days, which is super sweaty. I don’t relish putting my nice/expensive parka on over my sweaty gross gym clothes, but don’t want to spend the time changing and showering at the gym, so I’ve been considering picking up “the coat” just for wearing to the gym.

  2. Susan says:

Did anyone else bristle at the term “sweet breads”? Bahaha
If you grew up in the Deep South you might have a different definition.

  3. Emily says:

I bought that sweater shaver like a week ago and my life will never be the same. 10/10 would buy again.

  4. Denise says:

Ah the ‘mommy makeover’. I’ve even had advertisements on my facebook news feed for this type of thing. I’m stuck on this topic. On the one hand, I sort of think ‘whatever floats your boat’, on the other hand I wonder why we as a society suggest to women that we need to have babies, and then erase all physical evidence that we ever carried babies as soon as possible. My body definitely looks different post babies, it doesn’t bother me that much…but might if I was single and dating I guess? Not sure…

    • Belle says:

I agree. I want women to do what will make them feel confident, but I don’t want to contribute to a societal declaration that women who don’t look like they’ve had children are somehow doing a better job recovering or are to be deified.

  5. SLG says:

That article about The Wing is fascinating. And what’s even more fascinating to me is the common underlying tendency in so many articles about women’s professional success: to assume that if one group of women succeeds, another group can’t.

Our success is not a zero-sum game. The Wing can be a place for women who can afford the fees to connect with each other, AND we can all create more opportunity for women with fewer advantages. There is enough for us all.

I say this as someone who in my ideal life would be a Wing member, hobnobbing with all kinds of cool women all the time, but in my real life the closest Wing location is an hour away during rush hour and I can’t justify the cost. That may change someday, but for now I’m cheering them on and channeling Amy Poehler: “Good for them all, not for me (for now).”

  6. Mallory says:

Those breads are mallorcas and they are SO good for brunch, especially as a ham and cheese sandwich!

  7. Jessica says:

It is astounding to me that so many people think that if they are unable to participate, no one should. No, right now I cannot spend $250/month on a membership. Even if I never thought I would be able to spend that on a membership, I still think it’s good for the women who can afford it.

  8. Jessica says:

OMG I’ve been eyeing that coat for months…would LOVE a separate review post. The sizing and construction are my primary concerns…it looks like it could be so cute OR huge, bulky, messy.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
