Judge of a man by his questions rather than by his answers.” — Voltaire

Perfected. 10 professional skills we should all master.

WhoWhatWorn. I love this Target collab, esp. this dotted top and this $30 dress.

Cleaned. Is clutter also making you bad with money?

Whitened. Hopefully, this odd-looking device will whiten my teeth.

Hustled. How MLMs are hurting female friendships.

Laced Up. On Monday, I posted my annual Valentine’s Day Lingerie post.  Nordstrom Rack is offering deals on V-day gifts and cocktail dresses for date night.

Worked. “Should I quit my job if I don’t get better projects?”

Spelled. A hilarious children’s book that’s probably more for adults.

Grounded. Domestic abuse takes many forms.  Sen. Joni Ernst was emotionally abused for being successful.  Abusers control with money and threat of ruin.  Others ‘gaslight’ their partners to manipulate and control their actions.  And technological abuse — using cell phones to extend abuse outside the home or controlling a person’s ‘smart’ home — is a growing threat.

I just feel so much more pulled-together when my nails are painted.  But working in a conservative place, I need to keep the colors to pinks and reds.  My new favorite shade is this OPI Somewhere Over the Rainbow Mountains polish.  It’s a mauve-nude-pink that doesn’t wash out and looks very feminine.

there’s no link to the clutter/money article?

  2. Dee says:

Love that nail color – thanks for sharing.

  3. Rebecca says:

For teeth whitening I’ve had great success with the Crest 3D White Brilliance Daily Cleansing and Whitening System (https://www.amazon.com/Crest-Brilliance-Toothpaste-Whitening-System/dp/B00ZKLLZAI).

I use it every evening in place of traditional toothpaste. It’s only $12 bucks and my teeth are evenly white and I don’t get the sensitivity to cold that you experience with the strips or trays.

    • Kelly says:

I love the Crest strips but hate the sensitivity. Might definitely pick this up at Target very soon. How long does it take to see results?

    • Jenn S. says:

I’m glad that this kit is working for you, but I happened to have a bad experience with it. Apparently stannous fluoride (instead of what is normally used, sodium fluoride) is a little more aggressive and can cause gum irritation and whatnot.

So if this happens to you, you aren’t crazy or alone – the ingredient just isn’t for you! 🙂

  4. Jessica says:

Is Target moving more towards the online space regarding clothing? It used to be my go-to store for clothes and shoes and now I literally only go for their Home/Decor sections. All of the pieces I see in store are super trendy (holes, crops, straight from 1992, etc) with hardly any basics or work sections. I wonder if this is just my store or all around? I like a lot of the pieces in the Who What Wear collection but none of them are in my stores!

  5. Allison says:

Thanks for sharing the MLM article. Would love to know other readers opinions. The realities of MLM, less than 1% success rate is so terrifying, and I think women are too embarrassed to admit when they are in over their head. I’ve never participated in one but I have felt that embarrassed sting when someone you thought was a friend pitches you a product, and you realize they are just seeing dollar signs when you were hoping for friendship. I do think it hurts that person involved in MLM, people I used to include in things I no longer include, because I know they will start pitching their product to any new friends, and I don’t want to be the culprit of that. Personally, I think they are terrible.

    • KaTel says:

A family member with a career in retail is the only person I know who was successful at MLM (Pampered Chef). She built a book of clients that had nothing to do with her family, friends or her faith community. She was successful in my estimation because she was a skilled salesperson selling a product that had utility. A certain well know MLM “skin care” brand is the reason I no longer speak to a colleague in another office. She’s so focused on that she’s useless for “phone a friend” work questions.

      • Belle says:

A friend of Kyle’s was doing a lipstick MLM, can’t remember the name, but she was the rare success. Had like 25 people under her, was making thousands a month. She tried to get me into it when she heard I had a blog, I just explained that I rarely wear lipstick and wasn’t a good resource for her. She backed off and it wasn’t a problem, which was a big relief. A lot of people in Spokane are selling oils now though, and I’m constantly dodging Facebook invites.

        • Allison says:

Interesting! What scares me about people who are successful, is the people under them. How many people that are under them are losing money? I’d feel accountable to that. No dig to Kyle’s sister in particular, just my thoughts on the concept.

  6. Lauren says:

Glad you and Hitha both shared that article on finances from The Cut! It resonated a lot with me.

  7. Annie says:

For anyone interested in the MLM piece, I highly recommend the podcast The Dream. It’s an 11 episode series that digs into the world of MLMs. It’s extremely well produced; I found it sad, yet completely fascinating.

  8. Nicole D says:

I completely relate to the MLM article. I’m a mom to two kids with a full-time job outside the home. My husband also has a full-time job outside our home. It can be very isolating to care for children, go to work, make dinner, care for children, rinse and repeat. Sometimes I desperately crave some girl-time with friends, but it seems the other mom’s I know ONLY host MLM parties for “girl time”…. I’ve stopped going to them, because when I did I would be guilted into buying something I didn’t need or want… it’s a vicious cycle.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
