“The grass is greener where you water it.” — Neil Barringham

Timeless. Sloane Crosley contemplates giving up the chase for eternal youth.

Classic. These Sam Edelman Penny Riding Boots are just so chic.

Redefined. Meet the women of the 116th Congress.

Reimagined. Need earrings? These sliced-diamond cluster studs are everything.

Spangled. What is glitter?  (The answer may surprise you.)

Sequined. This liquid-sequin cami would look great under this AllSaints leather jacket.

Together. When ‘honest’ women replace ‘self-made’ men.

Smoothed. Very interested in this Origins Rose Clay Re-Texturizing Mask.

Jetsetting. Meet the honeymoon-planner for billionaires.

My new schedule is brutal.  Up at 5:30.  Home around 6:00pm.  Blog until 10:00pm.  Sleep a few fitful hours where I have dreams about policy (it’s an illness), and repeat.  Add that to a lot of salty lunches  and sugary snacks, and my skin needs some real TLC (and a lot more water).

Meghan at Wit & Whimsy has been touting the Ice Roller for a year.  I finally grabbed one, and whoa.  It depuffs my face in minutes.  Not to mention that I find it extraordinarily revitalizing in the early morning hours.  I’ll never doubt Meghan again.

I’ve lately been wondering if I need to start rolling my face in the morning as I put make up on my puffy eyes lol. Good timing. I feel like the cold would feel good, too.

    • Sarah says:

I have a jade roller and it is awesome. It feels amazing. I feel it does help me with some puffiness. But my favorite use is for clogged sinuses, I find it really helps drains them and helps alleviate some of the pressure.

      • Emily says:

I’ve been thinking about buying a jade roller, but now I’m wondering whether I should opt for the ice roller instead. Has anybody used both or have any insight into why I should pick one over the other?

        • Belle says:

You can put the jade roller in the fridge/freezer and get a similar effect. I wanted a bit more cooling because my mores are enlarged from years of acne.

        • Kathleen H Lisson says:

I have both. The jade roller is the width of a finger and will fit into nooks and crannies of a face. The ice roller is as big as my entire hand. Just broad strokes with the ice roller on the face. Jade rollers can also go in the freezer. The danger for both is that they may start to smell like your freezer, which is yucky when you’re rolling it on your face in the morning.

  2. Jessica says:

There were some really great articles today. The honeymoon planning article blew my mind! It’s hard to even fathom some of what the people were requesting, things I would never even think of.

  3. anna c says:

I *just* bought the Sam Edelman boots in December. They are my new favorites, and I want to wear them every day.

  4. Megan says:

Sorry, I realize that it might feel rough after a few years out of the full-time workforce, but in what world is getting home from work at 6 PM and spending the evening working on your hobby a “brutal” schedule?

    • Belle says:

It’s really the having to be at work by 7 for an 11 hour workday, six days a week, and then following it up with three more hours of computer time when your eyes are ready to give up. Plus, it’s just 6pm for the next week until we start staying later to get bills ready for the next day. You’re right, I haven’t been going to an office for 8+ hours a day for a few years. But a 14 hour day on the computer and in meetings is a LONG damn day, even if the last three hours of work is trying to create good content.

    • Monica T says:

Sounds brutal to me! Of course, it’s not a competition either.

      • Belle says:

I get it. For people who work late, 6pm sounds great. It’s the early starts that are so brutal. I’ve tracked my sleep and my highest quality sleep is always between 4am and 630am. So now I have to wake up in the middle of that window, and it sucks.

    • Jo says:

Yeah, this seems like odd reasoning to use in the original comment – what does an end time matter in terms of determining how “brutal” a schedule is if you don’t know the start time? I used to have a coworker who left at 3:30 every day…after getting into the office at 4am (and was readily available via email after leaving the office). I would also assume there’s at least some financial benefit to the blog, so if we’re assessing total workload, then this is side hustle, not just hobby.

Good luck continuing the adjustment, Abra.

Side note – that was a charming piece in Elle linked above.

      • Belle says:

Sloane’s great. IF you haven’t read any of her books, they’re worth a look. I recommend I Was Told There Would Be Cake.

      • Anna says:

Agreed. I’m up at 5:20 for a 7-7:30 start, but I’m done with work at 4. When I worked on the Hill, I’d rarely even leave the office before 7pm, but I didn’t have to be in until 9. And the blog might be a hobby, but it’s still work. This isn’t just some online journal you update whenever you feel like it. You’re providing us with compelling content and information and doing so in a regular and consistent manner and getting an income in return. Is a pastry chef not working because baking is their hobby too? Or how about a writer or photographer?

And finally, who cares if this isn’t a brutal schedule compared to someone else’s? It’s brutal to you, and that’s what matters.

  5. kay says:

The honeymoon article made me chuckle. I work in private aviation where our jets are sold on hourly rates of $6,000 and up, so I have had then same types of clients mentioned. That being said, I have been the one to shop for the meats they mention.

  6. E says:

I have two pairs of the Sam Edelman boots featured, cognac and black and if you take care of them, they wear like iron. I use heel taps and get them cleaned a few times a season, and they are in great shape. A classic boot that is well made and well-priced.

  7. Sally says:

I have those boots, and like them, but feel like flat knee-high boots have gone a little out of style… what do you wear them with?

  8. Christine says:

One more note on the Penny boots – I have them in cognac and YES they are chic and beautiful, but they are not for the wide foot. I deal with it because I got them for a steal and love the look, but they kind of cut off circulation to my toes because they’re so tight around the middle of my foot, lol.

  9. Margaret says:

The Origins Rose Clay mask is AMAZING. It’s my go to mask and my skin feels soft but not tight and dry. I also love their Drink Up Intensive mask which I sometimes use as a regular night moisturizer when I’m traveling for work.

    • Jennifer says:

I love the drink up mask! I use it instead of moisturizer every time I fly, and over moisturizer each night in the dead of winter.

  10. Kayleigh says:

I have the Penny riding boots in both black and brown! The brown were actually a hand-me-down from a cousin as they were a bit beat up, but I think they really wear that well. I have gotten the black re-soled and probably plan on doing that for the brown this year as well. I think this is at least my third winter with the black ones, and I live in Fairfield County, CT, so they get a fair amount of water/ salt/ ice/ some snow beating. They still are as chic as the day I got them!

  11. Liz Oxhorn says:

The best secret about the Penny boots is that they fit women with wide calves! I have the hardest time finding boots. Even so-called “wide calf” rarely zip over my calves – but these do. I have both colors and adore them.

  12. V says:

I have had the Penny Riding boot in both Brown and in Olive for four years and I love them. They look like new despite my not doing much more than wiping road salt off of them after snowy days. The extended calf version is great for anyone who needs a larger circumference – they are the only boots where I have bit of extra space in the calf.

  13. Meghan says:

WHEN DID YOU DOUBT ME BEFORE!? I kid, I kid. I am so glad you have one now and can relish in its amazing benefits!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
