Ask the Edit: Shoes for Flared Trousers

Oct 30, 2018

Wider leg openings — like bootcut, flares, and wide legs– are coming back (thank goodness).  But what shoes do you wear with these wider styles?

Hi Abra,

Big fan of your blog here! I was wondering if you could give me advice on what styles of shoe to pair with long trousers that have a flared bottom?

I know the fashionable choice would be heels or heeled booties, but for those days where I just want to be comfortable in my business casual fed gov office, what do you recommend?

Thanks, Catherine

Flares should have a high heel to work their leg lengthening spell, but it’s not the only way to wear them.  If you can’t wear heels, flats are fine, as long as they have pointed-toes.

The point on the toe draws the eye away from the bottom of the jean, and makes your legs look longer.  Just hem the jeans so they nearly touch the ground, breaking slightly on the front of the shoe.

For comfortable pointed-toe shoes, I like Caslon’s Luna pumps.  They’re generously padded in the footbed, but they also have good structure.  I’ve also heard good things about these under-$50 Journee flats.

If you want a pointed toe shoe that’s endlessly comfortable, you know how I feel about my Rothy’s.  I wear them so often that I had to buy more insoles.  If you haven’t tried them yet, drop the skepticism and give them a go.

Feel free to lose the heels and go with a flat.  Or if you just want a sturdier heel, try these cute calf-hair booties with a block heel and a point toe.  So cute for fall.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
