Pale Neutrals for Fighting the Fall Blues

Oct 17, 2018

I’m just not ready for fall.  I know that I can’t fight it.  The chilly mornings, the early sunsets, they’re already here.  But I’m not quite ready for sweaters and boots and scarves.  So let’s go with an outfit of pale neutrals to keep a bit of the summer vibe.

Outfit via 9 to 5 Chic

J.Crew Long Wool Cashmere Coat ($365) // Wolf & Badger Pink Pearl Earrings ($32) //  Vince Pleated Skirt ($325) // Marc Fisher Pumps ($49) // W Concept Half-Sleeve Sweater ($86) //  Danielle Nicole Julia Bag ($49)

Coat. I own a similar coat from J.Crew.  I need to hav the liner changed so that I can keep wearing it, because I intend to be buried in it.  I love it that much.

J.Crew is having a 35%-off sale with code FLASH until end of day on 10/17.  But if this coat is a bit steep to you, try this Mango coat with a dramatic collar or this $99 Uniqlo coat.  Plus-size?  Check out this Ralph Lauren coat.

Skirt. This pleated skirt from Vince is a fantastic piece that you can wear in any season.  For early fall, wear it with a lightweight sweater.  For winter, try it with a dramatic blush sweater.

Other skirt options include this pleated Simply Be skirt.  Not loving pleats?  Try this Antonio Melani blush leather skirt or this Tibi satin skirt.  If the blush color isn’t essential to you, this pleated Antonio Melani skirt comes in a pale beige color.

Sweater.  Short sleeve sweaters are a nice option for cool, but not cold, weather.  You can wear them solo or layer them under cardigans or blazers.  This W Concept sweater is a nice option, but there are lots of good choices.

This Kate Spade sweater has adorable ruffle details on the sleeves.  This puff sleeve sweater from Club Monaco is also great.  And Ann Taylor has a sale-priced option in a handful of colors.

Other Pieces.  The shoes match the color of the skirt with a pinky-beige hue.  I’ve tried these shoes on, and they are surprisingly comfortable.  I also like these Franco Sarto heels with a chunkier, block heel.

I like these pink pearl earrings because they’re a bit different.  If they’re not for you, these $19 Argento Vivo rose gold earrings are a real steal.

In the source photo, Anh is carrying a cool Fendi bag in cognac.  It’s a bit pricey for me, so I picked this Danielle Nicole tote because I thought the shape was so cool.  This T-shirt and Jeans bag has a cool slouchy look.  I also like this incredibly sleek top-handle bag from Zulily.

As for how to style your hair, I would keep it loose and natural.  For the makeup, I like these Charlotte Tilbury eye pencils, and the bronzed garnet would look amazing with this outfit.  Pair it with Charlotte’s infamous pillow talk, nude lipstick.

Just a heads up, none of these links are working.

They’re working for me. What browser are you on? Do you think they’re being blocked or just not working? I can submit a support ticket if I have more info.

Hey there – I noticed you said you plan to replace the liner in your J.Crew coat and I’d love to do the same. Is this something any tailor or dry cleaner can do? Is it pricey?

    • Belle says:

My guess is that I’ll need a real tailor. I may take it to Cheryl Lofton in DC and have it done. I will report back.

I look forward to reading how it works out – thanks!

        • A says:

Cheryl Lofton has relined one of my J.Crew winter coats and dare I say the new lining and coat were in better shape, warmer, more resistant to tears than when I originally bought it. The new lining has also stood the test of time – with little wear compared to the original. It was a few years ago – so I don’t remember the exact price, but it was definitely under $200, possibly at the lower end of $100.

    • Katel says:

I bought an upgraded lining fabric at G Street Fabrics and had a trusted tailor (at my dry cleaner) re-line my coat a few years back. I recall spending around $125 for labor and materials. There are tutorials online to DIY a new lining using the old lining as a template. My sewing skills didn’t make me bold enough to try.
I pegged replacement cost for similar quality coat at >$500 so it was worth it to me. Bonus my black coat has a red lining so it can’t be mistaken for someone else’s!

      • Belle says:

Replacement for this coat — old cashmere, J.Crew pre-Jenna Lyons is $800 on eBay. So as long as I’m under $200, I’m good.

Thanks for these! Although I’m sure they are more work for you, I love these kind of posts, for the ideas they offer me, not only in buying but in early-AM dressing ideas.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
