Ask the Edit: Winter Shoes for Trousers

Oct 15, 2018

What shoes do you wear with skinny pants or straight leg pants?  Here are some winter shoe suggestions.

Hello,

I bought a few pairs of the MM LaFleur Foster pant. I love them and they’ve been great throughout the Seattle summer. As we transition into fall/winter, I’m not sure what kind of shoes to pair with them. Flats feel too bare for the colder temps but boots don’t seem to look right with a straight leg trouser?

Any thoughts appreciated! – Emily

One of the great things about the MM. Foster pant is the adjustable hem.  An internal snap let’s you shorten it to wear with flats, or lengthen it for heels.  This makes it a great choice for working women who switch up their shoes regularly.  But what do you do in the winter?

My first thought was a tight-fitting ankle boot.  I like these DKNY block-heel booties and these Corso Como  sock booties.  The snugger fit should keep them from looking odd with a straight leg pant.

These Vince Camuto Metseya pump has a high, split vamp that makes them good for winter wear.  They’re a nice crossover between pumps and booties.

Looking for flats?  These Gianni Bini suede flats are in a loafer style.  It’s not my favorite look, but it’s a ballet flat alternative for the cold weather.

Any reader suggestions from ladies who wear skinny/straight leg pants would be appreciated.

I wear pointed-toe pumps with skinny or straight trousers in the winter. It’s my preferred look; I can’t get booties to look right with any of my work pants for some reason. It is admittedly a bit chilly on the feet if your office isn’t well heated, though.

The Vince Camuto Metseya pump link is the same link as the sock booties. But speaking of the sock booties, do you wear them under then pants? Wouldn’t the pants look like high-waters at that point? I’m also having a hard time figuring out what shoes to wear with winter coming up.

I’ve tried on the Fosters and, at least on me, they’re below my ankles. I don’t think it would look dramatically different than just wearing heels with tights underneath the pants.

In the cool north European winter tight laced-up boots are a must have. They keep your feet warm and dry while still fitting under straight leg (suit) trousers. I’ve been out of the working world for a while in grad school, though I’m heading back soon and intend to do this again. Nude-to-you knee high stockings are great for pairing with heels or flats in the winter. Not the most youthful-feeling move, but made the chill way more tolerable! In the past I always bought the Nordstrom in-house brand, though I can’t attest to the quality now.

I agree with the tight-fitting ankle boot. I purchased these blondo boots:

when I was going to work in Seattle for a period and felt I needed something waterproof. They have worked well in Montana, too. No need to re-seal the suede, and the rubber bottom works well on slick surfaces. I do a ton of walking for work, so I needed a sturdier heel, but there are certainly cuter/sexier versions out there!

Loafers with skinny pants. I just bought a Louise et Cie pair I love.

I have two pairs of MM LaFleur Foster pants and they are at my ankle bone when I wear them long. Over the summer I’ve been pairing them with loafer mules and they look great! I bet a more cozy full loafer would be a great “winter” transition for them. With my height and where they fall, I don’t think I could pull off a boot of any type, but winter isn’t that long or that cold here in SoCal.

  8. Caitlin says:

Most of my pants are skinny, so booties work well for me. Anything sleek – I particularly like Blondo’s waterproof suede. I also admit that I’ll sometimes stuff them in a pair of sleek riding boots – since it’s fitted through the thigh I don’t end up with weird bagging.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
