Three Ways: An Olive Skirt

Oct 9, 2018

You asked for it, so it’s back!  Three Ways to wear the items in your closet.  Starting with an olive, wool pencil skirt.

BR Ponte Midi Pencil Skirt ($78)

Skirt. Color I am loving for fall: olive.  It’s just such a great neutral.  And it goes with anything.

Sadly, this olive skirt from BR is pretty much sold out, but there are lots of other great choices.  I found this Express skirt for a very affordable $35.  And I really like the slit in this Chelsea Rose suit skirt, just $26.  Plus-size? Try this LOFT wrap skirt or this Eloquii pencil skirt.

Anais Topaz Studs ($130) // BR Boiled Wool Sweater ($118) // Sarah Flint Emma Pump ($345)

Monday. The first outfit is a mix of navy and olive, a simple, subtle combination.  This slightly oversized BR sweater pairs well with the fitted BR skirt.  If you prefer a snug fit, try this J.Crew balloon sleeve turtleneck.

For the shoes, I wanted them to match the skirt.  As you might imagine, olive shoes are tough to find.  These Sarah Flint pumps are just the sleekest.  I also like these more affordable Dolce Nome heels.

For the hair, I would wear it up.  Some kind of soft updo, like this sideways French twist.  For the makeup, keep it minimal with a sheer berry lip.

Mural Curve Blazer ($74) // J.Crew 365 Tie Neck Top ($50) // M.Gemi Rivista Heel ($278)

Wednesday.  I saw a variation of this outfit on the State of Florida’s sign language interpreter during the last hurricane (I can find inspiration anywhere), and I loved it.  Just take a simple black blazer and any feminine black blouse to create a chic, modern work outfit.  Who says dressing up for a big meeting has to be stuffy?

The interpreter’s outfit was actually a little better than this one.  She was wearing a sleek, inverted notch blazer.  I found this one from Nine West and this BR long and lean ponte blazer.

I didn’t show any earrings for this outfit (no space), but I would have gone with these pewter hoops from boohoo.

Because the colors in this outfit are so stark, I would wear my hair down.  Maybe half-up, if I need it out of my face.  For the makeup, I would use a plum blush or bronzer.  Pink might look to harsh.

Links of London Earrings ($145) // Halston Ruffled Cami ($130) // Rachel Zoe Patent Sandal ($140)

Friday. This skirt can be dressed up or dressed down, but I wanted to show a cocktail outfit.  So here it is in another of my favorite color pairings — blush and olive.

I chose this dramatic Halston tank, but it’s not available in every size.  This Cuyana tank is also a great option.  Want something with sleeves?  Try this flutter-sleeve grey satin blouse.

I adore these long chain earrings from Links of London.  For something a bit cheaper, try these $10 H&M drops.

For the makeup, I would do a dark eye.  I love these Charlotte Tilbury eye pencils; they make smokey eyes easy.  For the hair, it’s a dealer’s choice situation.  You could go for a sleek, long ponytail, or straighten the hair for a 90s catwalk style.

Nice combinations! What about yellow with olive? You have recommended yellow and green as a combo in the past and it is such a refreshing choice… is there a shade of yellow that would work well with olive or is it a no go?

    • A says:

Would love to hear what Belle would suggest, but from personal experience, olive green also works with a mustard yellow (closer to yellow than ochre) as well as some rust shades. Don’t know if there’s a better combo or yellow shade for other skin tones, but it works on my medium, olive skin.

    • Belle says:

A is right. A mustard would work. You could also try burgundy, sky blue, or pea green.

  2. M says:

    Love this feature!

Sarah Flint is a new brand for me, but I love what the brand appears to be about. Belle or other readers, have you tried them? Are they truly comfortable as advertised?

    • Steph says:

I have a pair of Sarah Flint flats… they are fairly comfortable. I am an 8.5 and I did end up having to exchange them for the next half size up, but I also have feet on the wider side.

  3. L says:

You’re a goddess! So good. This blog is the best.

  4. anna c says:

Yay, I love this series!! Those are great suggestions – thank you!

  5. Jess says:

Love this! Thanks for bringing the “3 ways” post back!

  6. kt says:

These are so great! I love non-boring work outfit inspiration.

  7. L says:

Would you ever do posts about budgeting for fashion/beauty purchases? I’ve always purchased as-needed but am curious if people take a more formal approach and if so, how.

  8. Allison says:

Just want to say what a great post this is. I have all of these items (well, similar ones) in my closet already, and I would have never put them with an olive skirt, which I also already have. This is so helpful for rethinking pieces I already own. Thank you for bringing back Three Ways!

  9. sbe says:

Love this! So happy to see this feature back. I get so caught up in an all-black rut with my work clothing, so it’s nice to have some inspiration and different ways to use things that are already in my closet.

  10. Steph says:

So happy to see Three Ways! It’s been my very favorite thing on your blog for years! If you are still taking content suggestions, I especially love the Three Ways (or Two Ways) where you use a piece for both a work outfit and a casual outfit so would love to see one of those soon!!!

    • Diane says:

These are my favorite too. It is easier to put outfits together when I can visualize them, and the pictures help remind me of what I already own. And I feel more comfortable buying new items when I have several ideas with how they will work with my wardrobe.

  11. Sally says:

What color tights/stockings would you wear with an olive skirt?

  12. Amy says:

My favorite feature! Great job & thanks, Belle!

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
