A simple cable sweater is a great piece for winter and fall. But how do you style it? Especially when you’re looking for an outfit that is better than basic?
Cable Sweater. Once you own a basic cable sweater, you can wear it casually or for work. This Banana Republic sweater has a more modern look with the chunky weave and the split hem. Want more of a fisherman style? Try this LL Bean sweater or this Frye sweater.
Plus-size? For a classic cable, check out this Land’s End sweater. Petite? The BR sweater comes in petite sizes as well.
Printed Blouse. This heart-print Anine Bing blouse is charming and just the right amount of fun. Wearing it under a sweater, lets just a hint of print peek out. So you’re not overloading on the whimsical print. If you’re not into hearts, try this dot print Ann Taylor or this NY&Co. graphic print bow blouse.
Looking for something more casual? Go with a plaid. Look like every blogger you’ve seen picking an apple or sipping cider while sitting on a hay bail. Here’s a buffalo plaid, or this Rails hunter plaid.
Satin Skirt. Sure, you can wear this sweater with an ivory pencil skirt. But why not jazz it up a bit for your next dinner and drinks event? This Mango satin skirt is a chic, affordable option.
Other options include lace skirts, tulle skirts, chiffon skirts, or delicate pleated skirts. Your goal is to emphasize the juxtaposition between the chunky knit and the feminine skirt.
Corduroy Pants. Hello, 1996. Corduroy is back in a big way this season. LOFT has these awesome bootcut pants for $39. They come in six awesome colors. This teal is nice, but I’m all about the deep plum.
I also found these Free People bootcut cords in mustard, cobalt, and violet. These mauve St. John’s Bay corduroys, in a straight leg, are great. Or go with these dramatic flares from & Other Stories. Looking for skinny? LOFT has you covered there, too.
Plus-size or Petite? Talbot’s sells a great pant in lots of great colors.
So what do you wear with your cable knit sweaters to jazz them up a bit? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Can anyone recommend a little more stretchy cord pant?
My older JCrew ones had absolutely no stretch, and unfortunately for a 5’2 athletic build (hello quads), the pants were absolutely miserable.
AG makes one that has some stretch. Most of the Nordstrom locations have them. I have a pair from Old Navy from last year, they might have them again.
Kut from the Kloth has nice cords with stretch and are very comfy.
You can find them at Nordstrom.
I have a pair of loft cords that have a great amount of stretch…accommodating without saggy knees at the end of the day. Same cuts as their denim.
