Mixing it Up: Coat and Scarf Combinations

Sep 26, 2018

Every day, you put together an outfit.  You mix-and-match pieces.  You choose accessories.  And then, in the cold weather, you hide it all away under a coat and scarf.  So let’s breathe a little life into your fall/winter color palette.

You will notice none of these coats are black.  I don’t own a black coat.  Yes, black is classic, but at some point, you’re just blending into a sea of black coats that all look the same from a distance.

Blush Cuyana Scarf ($75) // Burgundy Dorothy Perkins Coat ($119)

Burgundy or eggplant coats are nice because they’re a versatile cold weather color.  You can pair your wine-colored coat with a blush scarf to soften the look.  Need a neutral?  Try grey, like this $13 oversize scarf.  Looking for even more punch?  Go with deep teal.

Olive LL Bean Boiled Wool Coat ($199) // Navy Twist Knit Infinity Scarf ($8)

An olive-y green and navy is a chic combination because it’s neutral, but impactful.  I adore this LL Bean coat with it’s funnel collar.  Such a good price for a warm coat.

Looking for a non-infiniti scarf?  Try this East Dane scarf.  If you need more of a neutral, try an ivory scarf. If you want a subtler contrast, try something in sage.

Beige H&M Double-Breasted Coat ($129) // Leopard BP Scarf (sold out)

Sadly, every time Nordstrom restocks this scarf, it sells out in a day.  I also love this pricier Chan Luu scarf in a grey, snow-leopard look.  Or, for under-$75, this grey-ish J.Crew scarf and this classic Talbot’s scarf.

Not into leopard print?  I would pair an ivory coat with a plaid scarf.  I like this marigold/navy one and this taupe/mauve/navy one (drop dead gorgeous).

Grey Cashmere Top Coat ($365) // Rust Roberto Cavalli Scarf ($174)

Lastly, I’ve always liked rust and grey together.  Rust is really an under-appreciated color.  It is a really warm neutral that looks good with any neutral (except black).  For a less expensive scarf, try & Other Stories.  Other colors to pair with grey besides black include mauve, pine, and mustard.

Any recommendations on how to store lots of scarves for easy use? I’ve tried hanging in the closet (take up a lot of room), rolling in a basket (get too wrinkled), and folding in a drawer (out of sight, out of mind) so I’d love any suggestions!

This is so helpful (I don’t think of colors with grey but want to try these). Echoing others that the content has been extra on point lately!

I have an eggplant wool coat that I adore. Would you still pair that with blush or would you choose a different color?

    wonderful combinations.

Staring down our 126th day in the triple digits here in AZ, this post makes me want to cry with jealousy, haha.

What would you suggest for a cranberry colored coat? I love the ModCloth scarf you posted but I’m not sure if it would be the best combo. What do you think?

    • Belle says:

The Modcloth was more of a cape than a scarf. For cranberry, I would think a blush, a navy, a gray or a camel would all be nice.

I love a classic grey + neutral plaid. A white or creamed-based plaid looks fantastic, you just have to be careful to keep it off the ground and away from lipstick.
